Carlos Sainz verwacht 'compleet andere Formule 1' in 2020

Mocht het Formule 1-seizoen 2020 nog op gang komen, dan wordt het een jaargang zoals de teams, coureurs en fans nog nooit eerder hebben gezien. Die verwachting leeft bij McLaren-rijder Carlos Sainz. De Spanjaard houdt rekening met acht tot veertien Grands Prix dit seizoen, maar het zou ook zomaar uit kunnen monden in de deceptie van een jaar zonder races.

Alles is mogelijk. Sainz houdt dan ook alle opties open, bekende hij aan Sky Sports. "Als we de situatie niet wereldwijd onder controle krijgen, dan valt het te begrijpen dat we dit jaar helemaal niet meer racen. Ik moet wel toegeven dat ik dat moeilijk zou kunnen accepteren of verkroppen. Ik zou dankbaar zijn als we een paar races kunnen afwerken."

"Het is denkbaar dat we uiteindelijk toch tot tien Grands Prix komen, of tussen de acht en veertien races. Twee races op hetzelfde circuit, spookraces, tweedaagse evenementen; alles is mogelijk. Het wordt een compleet andere Formule 1, al wil ik er nog niet te veel aan denken. Het gaat nu niet om autoraces, het gaat nu om mensenlevens en banen. Dat zijn veel belangrijkere zaken."

    Dat ben ik met Sainz eens, en vraag me af of je dat als FIA en LM wel moet willen.

    Gaan racen als wereldwijd het virus nog niet onder controle is kan ook kwaad bloed zetten en je merk schaden.

    Beter kan je denk ik de volle focus zetten op dit raceloze jaar overleven om volgend jaar hopelijk weer een representatief programma te kunnen afwerken.

    Kijk wat er in China gebeurd waar de maatregelen na versoepeling nu ook weer aangescherpt moeten worden.

    Je kan als F1 ook niet riskeren straks weer ergens raceklaar te staan en last minute moeten cancelen omdat het toch niet haal/werkbaar blijkt binnen het virus veilig te racen.

      Sainz heeft een interview met Sky Soprt en dit rolt eruit. Wat zou je dan willen dat Sainz had gezegt bijdehandje?

    Studie van de universiteit van Harvard gaf aan dat het wel eens zou kunnen duren tot begin 2022 voor alles terug in zijn plooi valt, als dit waar is (lijkt me ook plausibel aangezien dit ongeveer ook het tijdstek is voor een vaccin) gaat het er zeker anders gaan uitzien :/
