Downforce, het is een van de belangrijkste termen uit de Formule 1. Letterlijk betekent het neerwaartse druk, de auto wordt als het ware op het asfalt gedrukt. De teams die op dit vlak hoge ogen gooien, maken grote kans om ook goede resultaten te boeken. Maar hoe werkt die downforce precies? Kan een Formule 1-bolide zoveel neerwaartse druk genereren dat het mogelijk is om bijvoorbeeld in een tunnel ondersteboven tegen het plafond aan te rijden? Mercedes ging een gesprek aan met engineer Mike Elliot om daar achter te komen.
