F1-prijzenpot bijna helemaal leeg bij races zonder publiek

Het prijzengeld dat de Formule 1-teams onderling mogen verdelen verdampt voor een groot deel als de Grands Prix allemaal zonder toeschouwers plaatsvinden. Dat schrijft journalist Christian Sylt voor Forbes. De prijzenpot bestond in 2019 nog uit 1 miljard dollar, maar daar blijft in een scenario met races zonder publiek nog maar zo'n 68 miljoen dollar van over.

De Formule 1 dreigt namelijk een groot deel van de race fees mis te lopen. Vorig jaar betaalden de promotors 602,1 miljoen dollar voor het organiseren van Grands Prix. Misschien dat een enkeling nog iets overmaakt vanwege de globale exposure, maar de meesten kunnen het prijskaartje voor een Grand Prix niet meer terugverdienen via kaartverkoop en zullen dus minder gretig zijn om te betalen. De totale omzet van de Formule 1 bedroeg vorig seizoen 2 miljard dollar. Zonder inkomsten uit race fees blijft er 1,4 miljard dollar over, maar er zijn meer inkomstenposten die wegvallen.

Wat te denken van de 100 miljoen dollar uit de hospitality? En 673 miljoen dollar uit de kaartverkoop? Tel daar de vaste lasten van de Formule 1 van 528 miljoen dollar bij op en er blijft een 'magere' winst van rond de 100 miljoen dollar over. De prijzenpot voor de teams bestaat uit 68 procent van de winst, vandaar de schatting van 68 miljoen dollar aan prijzengeld.

Mogelijk wendt Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media andere middelen aan om de prijzenpot op peil te houden. Door het schuiven met aandelen zorgde het Amerikaanse bedrijf vorige week al voor een kapitaalinjectie van 1,4 miljard dollar voor de koningsklasse van de autosport. Maar als ze daarmee het totale prijzengeld voor de teams op hetzelfde niveau willen houden, blijft er weinig van over om de huidige crisis te doorstaan.

Ik wil niet heel lullig doen... maar ik denk direct aan Williams. Dat team dat een lening heeft afgesloten met papa Latifi met als onderpand zo'n beetje de gehele autocollectie waar Frank zo hard voor heeft gewerkt... De FW08, De FW10, De FW14B, de FW18 allemaal voor mij bijzondere auto's dat even vergokt wordt als onderpand.
