Racing Point: "Start van seizoen in Oostenrijk realistisch"

Racing Point-teambaas Otmar Szafnauer acht een seizoensstart begin juli in Oostenrijk haalbaar. De Formule 1 heeft de intentie om de jaargang 2020 op 5 juli af te trappen op de Red Bull Ring nabij Spielberg. Hoe de rest van het seizoen eruit komt te zien is nog een groot vraagteken, maar het is een reëel streven om te beginnen met de Oostenrijkse Grand Prix.

Dat stelt Otmar Szafnauer in gesprek met CNN. "Als Oostenrijk het goed blijft doen met het coronavirus in bedwang houden en het er zijn tests beschikbaar om iedereen uit de paddock te testen op het virus, dan is een start van het seizoen op de Red Bull Ring zeker realistisch. Als we in juni zeggen dat het doorgaat, dan is het veilig genoeg om te racen en is het spel op de wagen. Ik denk dat alle teams zonder problemen aan de start kunnen verschijnen."

De Oostenrijkse regering ziet vooralsnog geen obstakels voor een groot sportevenement begin juli. Werner Kogler, minister van Sport, vertelde aan ORF: "Zolang aan alle eisen voldaan wordt, zie ik geen reden om de Grand Prix te verbieden. De Formule 1 krijgt dezelfde behandeling als andere sporten en dezelfde eisen en voorwaarden zijn van kracht. De situatie is anders dan voetbal, maar social distancing moet gewaarborgd zijn. Anders gaat de lokale overheid er niet mee akkoord."

De provincie Stiermarken, waar de Red Bull Ring ligt, voorziet vooralsnog ook weinig problemen. Gouverneur Hermann Schützenhöfer: "Natuurlijk steun ik het idee dat de Formule 1 dit jaar naar Stiermarken en de Red Bull Ring komt. We moeten onze positieve instelling niet verliezen in deze crisis. Het zou geweldig zijn om beelden van een spannende Grand Prix tegen de achtergrond van een prachtig Oostenrijks berglandschap via de televisie de wereld rond te sturen."

Mooie foto, krijg dan helemaal een dubbel gevoel. Leuk dat het wellicht doorgaat. Bijzonder jammer dat we er niet meer heen kunnen. Wa vorig jaar 1 van mijn beste weekenden weg, heerlijke tijd gehad daar (woon in Engeland en vloog naar Munchen waar vrienden uit Nederland me oppikte op doortocht naar Oostenrijk)

Nogmaals, een minister van sport heeft in dit verhaal niets in de pap te brokken. Beslissingen vallen bij volksgezondheid. Leuk hoor dat mensen positief blijven in deze tijd, dat probeer ik ook te doen. Maar je moet ook realistisch zijn.. Stel, de race gaat door (met best veel mensen op het terrein) en we krijgen weer besmettingen. De huidige testen geven maar 70% waarborg!! Welke regering durft in de nabije toekomst dat risico aan? ... 't Gaat hier niet alleen om Oostenrijk! Ook Italië en de UK moeten mee willen werken. Ik zie het dit jaar niet meer gebeuren..

  Welke regering durft het risico aan om het land jaren lang op slot te houden?
  Als dadelijk massaal faillisementen gaan komen, massa ontslagen, pensioenkortingen van meer dan 20% etc.
  Het volk zal zich meer en meer laten horen, en de risico's voor lief gaan nemen.
  
  Wees misschien ook realistisch dat de huidige situatie niet lang vol te houden is!
