George Russell ruikt kansen om te profiteren van 'roestigheid'

De eerste races van het Formule 1-seizoen 2020 zullen het team van Williams kansen bieden om mooie resultaten neer te zetten. Dat denkt coureur George Russell. De jonge Brit vermoedt dat het er een beetje onwennig aan toe zal gaan zodra de Formule 1 op gang komt. De teams en coureurs hebben dan immers al een paar maanden weinig tot niets uitgespookt.

Eind februari scheurden de bolides voor het laatst in de rondte, tijdens de wintertest op het Circuit de Catalunya nabij Barcelona. Williams liet daarin een betere indruk achter dan het hele vorige seizoen. Veel slechter dan in 2019 kon het ook niet, de Britse renstal was vorig jaar het lelijke eendje van de Formule 1. De vooruitzichten voor 2020 zijn beter.

Zo leek in de tests de aansluiting met de middenmoot gevonden. Bovendien is iedereen straks een beetje 'roestig', zoals Russell het in de podcast F1 Nation omschrijft. Dat kan een mogelijkheid zijn om te scoren. Russell: "Over het algemeen opereert iedereen in de Formule 1 op de toppen van hun kunnen. Het zijn de beste rijders ter wereld en we racen zo vaak dat je in een bepaald ritme komt. De uitgestelde start van het seizoen kan daar verandering in brengen."

"Hopelijk betekent dat een voordeel voor ons. Als mensen roestig zijn, dan zul je merken dat er vooral in de eerste paar races meer fouten begaan worden. Ik moet zorgen dat ik daar niet bij hoor. Ook als je naar het team kijkt, ik moet proberen iedereen te motiveren en te doordringen van het feit dat we kansen zullen krijgen die we waarschijnlijk nooit meer krijgen. We moeten echt alles uit die eerste paar races halen zodra we weer aan racen toekomen."

Zelf vind ik hem vooral sympatiek.

Als dat zo is volgens Russell, hoe zit het dan met zijn eigen team? Zou wel leuk zijn een stuntje van Williams, maar vrees het ergste.

Ik vind hem echt een leider qua uitspraken. Hij is heel realistisch en komt met hele motiverende uitspraken. Zijn mentaliteit bevalt me wel.

  Zijn nieuwe teamgenoot is gewoon erg matig. En daarnaast is de Williams nog steeds niet goed genoeg. Eigenlijk zou je kunnen zeggen dat hij alleen kan verliezen dit jaar. Stel toch dat de matige Latifi bij hem in de buurt blijft. Ik zie dat laatste niet gebeuren, maar toch...

  Eens Snailer. Ik verwacht niet dat Williams hem een constante middenmoot geeft... maar ik hoop dat ze hem in iedergeval een auto geven waarmee hij "iets" kan laten zien. Zoals Marussia/Manor Bianchi & Wehrlein iets konden bieden als alles klopt. De afgelopen 2 jaar is Williams vreselijk... de mooiste momenten van Williams de afgelopen 2 jaar is Sirotkin in Singapore en Russel tijdens de kwalificatie op de Hungaroring... en dat was niet bijzonder.

  Aan de motor ligt het in ieder geval niet, 2 benzen voorop en 2 hobbelen achteraan, dat moet toch wel een gigantisch krom hok zijn, of toch andere motoren... hmm.
