Jenson Button kandidaat voor IndyCar-stoeltje bij McLaren

Jenson Button staat op de nominatie om in de nabije toekomst zijn IndyCar-debuut te maken. De wereldkampioen Formule 1 van 2009 behoort tot een drietal coureurs die aanmerking komen voor een derde inschrijving van Arrow McLaren SP, het IndyCar-team van McLaren. Het vaste duo Patricio O'Ward en Oliver Askew krijgen bij bepaalde races gezelschap van een extra teamgenoot.

Dat zijn niet de minste namen. Zo zal Fernando Alonso namens Arrow McLaren SP meedoen aan de Indy 500, die nu voor 23 augustus op het programma staat. Mogelijk verschijnt de Spanjaard ook aan de start van de GMR Grand Prix op het 'normale' circuit van Indianapolis op 4 juli. Daarnaast heeft het team ook veelvoudig NASCAR-kampioen Jimmie Johnson benaderd voor een optreden.

Voor Button was het bedoeling dat hij de race op Road America op 21 juni voor zijn rekening zou nemen. Die plannen zijn op een lager pitje komen te staan door de uitbraak van het coronavirus. Het raceseizoen ligt stil en daardoor kunnen Button en Johnson niet testen om te wennen aan het materiaal en op snelheid te komen. De plannen met Alonso blijven wel staan.

McLaren-baas Zak Brown deelde aan Motorsport-Total.com mede: "Ik heb met alle drie gesproken en ze hebben alle drie een zwak voor de IndyCar en willen racen. Ze zijn alle drie ook extreem competitief. Door het testverbod in de IndyCar wordt het voor dit jaar een lastig verhaal, maar het zou me niets verbazen om deze drie binnen niet al te lange tijd terug te zien in de IndyCar."

ik vraag me oprecht af of Jenson (die ik heel hoog heb zitten) wel past binnen de IC ik vind hem namelijk niet echt een coureur voor de Ovals, op de stratencircuits daarentegen wel.

volgens mij heeft hij zelf al eens aangegeven dat hij de ovals zelfs gevaarlijk vind mar ben hier nu even niet zeker van omdat ik het nergens terug kan vinden

  Jenson wat roadcourses... Alonso Indy GP en Indy 500... Johnson een paar ovals... Een leuke manier om het hele jaar de spotlight op het team te krijgen... ook wanneer O'Ward & Askew er niks van zouden bakken.

  Veel triathlon's, keertje ingevallen voor Alonso,wat interviews met de huidige coureurs.....dus knopje is aardig druk geweest de laatste jaren.
