'Gunstige omstandigheden voor langer verblijf Bottas bij Mercedes'

De uitbraak van het coronavirus is wellicht een geluk bij een ongeluk voor Valtteri Bottas. Oud Formule 1-coureur Karun Chandhok is van mening dat Mercedes in deze omstandigheden eerder geneigd zal zijn om ook na 2020 een beroep te doen op de Fin dan onder normale omstandigheden. De pandemie heeft immers de nodige veranderingen teweeg gebracht.

Zo zal het Formule 1-seizoen 2020 korter duren dan gepland. Daardoor zijn de teams minder in de gelegenheid om hun huidige rijders en eventuele vervangers te evalueren, waardoor ze het risico om een nieuwkomer aan te trekken mogelijk niet aandurven. Bovendien doen de huidige auto's ook in 2021 nog dienst, wat een ander argument is dat in het voordeel van continuïteit spreekt.

Een voordeel bij een nadeel, zo beschouwt Chandhok de huidige situatie voor iemand als Bottas. "Het zou me verbazen als Mercedes besluit om hem te vervangen", deelde hij aan persbureau STT mede. "Het seizoen is korter dan gebruikelijk en ze nemen deze wagens mee naar volgend seizoen, dus het meest logische zou zijn dat de teams doorgaan met hun huidige coureurs."

Daarnaast maakte Bottas tijdens de wintertests een solide indruk op Chandhok. "Valtteri heeft de beste baan ter wereld; hij mag voor Mercedes racen in de Formule 1. Tegelijkertijd is dat de slechtst denkbare positie voor een rijder, want met Lewis Hamilton heeft hij de beste coureur van zijn generatie als teamgenoot. Hamilton behoort tot de vijf beste rijders aller tijden."

"Zo bezien zijn Bottas en bijvoorbeeld ook Alexander Albon slecht gepositioneerd. Valtteri kwam echter sterk voor de dag tijdens de tests in Barcelona. Op zijn goede dagen is hij echt top. Hij moet alleen uitvogelen hoe hij vaker van die goede dagen kan neerzetten. Makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan, maar ik denk wel dat hij over de benodigde vaardigheden beschikt."

Russell is veel te goed om na dit jaar nog langer weg te moffelen in een achterhoedeteam, die moet je dus gewoon net als Max en Charles z.s.m. in je hoofdteam zetten. Lewis laat zich wel aan een andere heb je aan George een topper voor de komende decennia.

Nou nou Chandhok, dat zijn stevige uitspraken over Hamilton.....
Maar ik denk dat hij mbt Bottas wel eens gelijk heeft, ze hebben met Bottas een ideale tweede rijder die ook nog el eens een enkele keer goed voor de dag komt. Ik weet niet of Vettel een kapper op de weg is, het is een kleine mogelijkheid die bestaan. Maar Bottas heeft ook als voordeel dat Wolff zijn manager is geweest, die zal ook een goed woordje voor hem doen.

als dit zo is .. krijgt .Lewis niet alleen een mega salaris... maar wederom inbegrepen, een poetshulp, ballenjongen, en keukenhulpje in één erbij.... snik..

Voor Bottas is het 'Rosberg' jaar aangebroken. Vorig jaar kwam hij dichter en dichter op Hamilton te zitten. Ik kan me bijvoorbeeld een paar races herinneren waar Bottas hem in kwalificatie verpulverde. Als ik iets had verwacht, dan dat niet.
Bottas had altijd 1 issue. Hij gaat erg hard, maar dat kon hij alleen door de banden te verstieren. In 2018 was hij ook al snel, maar het gat in rondetijd met Hamilton werd per ronde groter en groter. Vorig jaar was de auto zo goed voor de banden dat bij langer hard kon blijven gaan. En zo te zien is de Mercedes nog beter geworden voor de banden. Dat zou 1 van de grootste obstakels voor Bottas wegnemen.
Tweede is natuurlijk dat hij niet zo goed is in inhalen. Maar dat is niet nodig indien je op kop rijdt.
Tot slot moet het geluk dat vorig jaar duidelijk richting Hamilton uitviel, Hamilton kreeg Canada cadeau terwijl hij daar erg slecht was. Hij had ook nog eens 3 keer een zeer gunstige safety card die hem de winst opleverde. Tot slot is Bottas vaker door pech uitgevallen.
Met een beetje geluk aan zijn kant wordt hij dit jaar zomaar kampioen.
