Spanje hoopvol over Grand Prix zonder publiek in de zomer

Het vertrouwen bij de organisatie van de Spaanse Grand Prix dat ze hun uitgestelde evenement later dit jaar in kunnen halen neemt met de dag toe. Dat laat Joan Fontsere, directeur van het Circuit de Catalunya nabij Barcelona, weten aan MotorsportWeek.com. De Grand Prix van Spanje stond oorspronkelijk voor vandaag op het programma, maar het coronavirus heeft daar een stokje voor gestoken.

Het Formule 1-seizoen 2020 moet nog van start gaan. De eerste tien evenementen op de originele kalender zijn reeds uitgesteld of geannuleerd, waaronder dus de Spaanse Grand Prix. Fontsere koestert echter goede hoop dat de race op het Circuit de Catalunya later dit jaar alsnog plaats kan vinden. Dan wel zonder publiek, zoals ook in Oostenrijk, Groot-Brittannië, Hongarije en (hopelijk) België zal gebeuren.

"Wat dit jaar betreft, ik ben vrij optimistisch dat we hartje zomer een Grand Prix achter gesloten deuren kunnen organiseren", vertelt de Spanjaard. "We zijn daarover in gesprek met Liberty Media en we hopen dat ons evenement opgenomen wordt in de Europese reeks Grands Prix ter opening van het seizoen 2020. Het ziet er verder niet naar uit dat we dit kalenderjaar nog evenementen met publiek kunnen organiseren."
