Nicholas Latifi: "Williams dichter bij middenmoot dan in 2019"

Het team van Williams heeft deze winter behoorlijke stappen voorwaarts gezet. Dat gevoel leeft bij coureur Nicholas Latifi. Door de coronacrisis heeft Williams nog niet kunnen bewijzen dat ze eindelijk weer een stijgende lijn te pakken hebben. Vorig jaar was de Britse renstal het lelijke eendje van de Formule 1, met slechts één schamel puntje als oogst voor het hele seizoen.

Debutant Nicholas Latifi denkt dat Williams dit jaar beter voor de dag zal komen. Aan La Presse vertelde de Canadees: "Het is waar, vanaf het eerste rondje tijdens de wintertests merkten we al dat de wagen beter reageert dan zijn voorganger en dat we dichter bij de middenmoot in de buurt zitten dan vorig jaar. Iedereen heeft hard gewerkt om onze situatie te verbeteren en de resultaten daarvan zijn zichtbaar, op een positieve manier. In Melbourne hadden we het kunnen bewijzen, maar nu moeten we nog even wachten voor een definitief antwoord op de vraag hoe goed we echt zijn."

De 24-jarige coureur kan niet wachten om dan eindelijk zijn officiële Formule 1-debuut te maken. "Er wordt gesproken over racen in Oostenrijk begin juli, maar wij weten ook niet veel meer over hoe de rest van het seizoen er dan uit komt te zien. Ik heb ook gehoord dat ze in de herfst misschien de Canadese Grand Prix in willen halen. De omstandigheden zijn dan ongetwijfeld anders dan in de zomer, maar dat maakt me niet uit. Van het weer trek ik me niks aan, ik wil gewoon racen", aldus Latifi.

Volgens mij is de middenmoot alles wat na Williams komt, tot RB. Dus bij er tegen aan, rij je nog steeds stijf achteraan.

  Maar hopelijk dichten ze het gat echt. Dat gaat beter laten zien hoe goed Russel is.

In de wintertesten hebben we kunnen zien dat er stappen gemaakt zijn.
Hopelijk zet die verbetering zich ook in de wedstrijden door.
