Race achter gesloten deuren onbespreekbaar voor Singapore

De organisatie van de Grand Prix van Singapore heeft de Formule 1-leiding laten weten dat een evenement achter gesloten deuren wat hen betreft geen optie is. De race op Marina Bay Street Circuit staat voor 20 september op de kalender, maar alles is onzeker sinds de uitbraak van het coronavirus. Er circuleert bijvoorbeeld ook een herzien schema waar Singapore op ontbreekt.

Wellicht dat de oorzaak daarvoor nu bekend is. De organisatie in Singapore acht een Grand Prix zonder toeschouwers immers niet mogelijk. "Het is niet haalbaar om de race achter gesloten deuren plaats te laten vinden", citeert de Straits Times een woordvoerder van het evenement.

Er is echter nog geen definitieve beslissing genomen over het lot van de Grand Prix. "De kalender voor 2020 moet nog worden afgerond en de Grand Prix van Singapore voert een open dialoog met de leiding van de Formule 1, de overheid en anders stakeholders om de opties te verkennen. De prioriteit gaat daarbij uit naar het waarborgen van de veiligheid van onze fans, vrijwilligers en alle inwoners van Singapore."

De tijd dringt ook voor de Grand Prix van Singapore. Het moment dat de opbouw van tijdelijke infrastructuur rondom het stratencircuit moet beginnen nadert namelijk. Daar komt door het late aanvangstijdstip van de race - Singapore is altijd een avondrace - bij dat de verlichting rondom de baan geplaatst moet worden. Momenteel gelden nog strenge restricties voor bouwwerkzaamheden in Singapore, al mag er vanaf 2 juni weer wat meer.
