Tost: "Sebastian Vettel niet iemand die als veldvulling wil dienen"

Sebastian Vettel is er de persoon niet naar om elke aanbieding uit de Formule 1 te accepteren om zijn aanwezigheid in de koningsklasse van de autosport te verlengen. Een rol als veldvulling is aan de viervoudig wereldkampioen niet besteedt, zegt Alpha Tauri-teambaas Franz Tost op Formula1.com. Voor Vettel heeft een langer verblijf in de Formule 1 alleen zin als hij om de winst mee kan doen.

Tost maakte de Duitser aan het begin van diens carrière mee bij Scuderia Toro Rosso. Samen presteerden ze het onmogelijk door in 2008 de Italiaanse Grand Prix te winnen. In die fase van zijn loopbaan nam Vettel nog genoegen met een auto die in principe niet goed genoeg was voor de winst, dat zal hij nu niet meer doen. Tost acht de Duitser nog steeds in staat om kampioenschappen te winnen, als het materiaal hem daartoe in staat stelt.

"Het einde van iets betekent ook altijd het begin van iets nieuws", steekt Tost van wal. "Het is echt afhankelijk van wat Sebastian tot zijn beschikking krijgt. Hij is een coureur van het kaliber dat in staat is om voor het kampioenschap te gaan. Dan heeft hij een stoeltje bij een van de drie topteams nodig. Dat zou hem de kans geven om races te winnen en weer de titel voor zich op te eisen. Ik ken Sebastian goed en ik weet zeker dat dit zijn voornaamste doel is."

Veldvulling

Tost vervolgt: "Hij is niet iemand die als veldvulling wil fungeren. Als we nu zouden racen, zou hij willen winnen. Het hangt er puur vanaf of de ingrediënten om te winnen aanwezig zijn. Voor het geld hoeft hij het niet meer te doen. Coureurs met kampioenschappen achter hun naam zijn sowieso niet bezig met de financiële kant van het verhaal, zij zijn gefocust op winnen. Sebastian is pas 32 jaar en met het juiste pakket - denk aan Mercedes, Ferrari of Red Bull Racing - kan hij races winnen en weer het kampioenschap veroveren, daar ben ik van overtuigd."

Aangezien Ferrari na dit jaar afscheid van hem neemt en een terugkeer bij Red Bull Racing geen optie is, blijft alleen Mercedes over voor Vettel als reële optie om zijn Formule 1-loopbaan voort te zetten.

Leuke foto. Die overwinning met de Toro Rosso (en zoveel oud Minardi personeel) blijft een onvergetelijk moment. Ik weet nog dat ik dat weekend dacht... leuk zo een pole position maar ga je dat de hele race vasthouden? Ja dus! En hoe! Prachtig!!!

Ik vind het van de ene kant jammer, van de andere kant is het heel bewonderenswaardig. Mercedes zit in de situatie dat ze het kunnen, ik denk alleen dat Mercedes er niet op zit te wachten.

  Ik zou het ook jammer vinden als Vettel geen plekje kan vinden. Vedetten geven kleur aan een koningsklasse als F1.
  
  Als Mercedes Bottas wegstuurt (gaat dat überhaupt ooit gebeuren?) en verruilt voor Vettel vrees ik dat het een deceptie wordt voor deze Duitser.
  
  Mercedes en HAM zijn twee handen op één buik en Lewis is daar als een vis in het water. Een voorspelbaar scenario zou zijn dat 'de auto Vettels rijstijl niet ligt' en Hamilton met 8 of meer titels Seb helemaal op vreet.
  
  Of zou Hamilton al met pensioen gaan? Nahh
  
  En toch duim ik dat het gebeurt, net zoals ik duimde dat Alonso in 2017 aangetrokken zou worden na wegvallen van Rosberg. Of toen Schumacher misschien kon invallen voor Massa in 2009, of Jos Verstappen in 2004 naar Jaguar, of Albers na kampioen te worden in DTM toch zeker wel naar Mclaren-Mercedes moest gaan. Aiii
