Mercedes-topman benoemd tot Aston Martin-voorzitter

Lawrence Stroll heeft zoals verwacht Tobias Moers benoemd tot nieuwe voorzitter van automerk Aston Martin. Moers is afkomstig van AMG, de performance-divisie van Mercedes. Hiermee verstevigt Stroll de banden tussen Aston Martin, Racing Point en Mercedes. Moers neemt bij Aston Martin het stokje over van Andy Palmer.

Mercedes is reeds de motorleverancier van Racing Point en levert tevens de motoren voor de straatauto's van Aston Martin. Daarnaast maakt Racing Point ook gebruik van andere hardware en de windtunnel van Mercedes. Het Formule 1-team wordt na dit jaar omgedoopt tot Aston Martin F1 Team, aangezien Stroll momenteel eigenaar is van beide.

Stroll: "Tobias is een extreem getalenteerde professional en een bewezen leider met een lange erelijst die stamt uit zijn vele jaren bij Daimler AG, met wie we een langlopende en succesvolle technische en commerciële samenwerking hebben die we graag voortzetten. Hij is de juiste man om Aston Martin Lagonda te leiden nu we onze strategie om het volledige potentieel van het merk te benutten gaan implementeren. Onze ambitie is significant, helder en alleen geëvenaard door onze vastberadenheid om te slagen."

Moers: "Ik heb altijd een passie voor performance-auto's gehad en ik koester deze kans om voor dit iconische merk aan de slag te gaan. Door de komst van Lawrence en de significante investeringen van zijn Yew Tree-consortium liggen er mooie mogelijkheden om het merk Aston Martin naar een hoger niveau te tillen en de productielijn verder uit te breiden."

  Ik denk eerder dat Mercedes als fabriekteam stopt. En dat ze alle pijlen op Stroll Jr. Gaan zetten om hem kampioen te maken. Dan zie ik Hamilton na dit seizoen stoppen ook. Ik durf het aan: Stroll eerder kampioen dan ons Max.

  @HoekieWoutstra: om wereldkampioen te worden heb je behalve de beste wagen ook echt talent nodig. Stroll kan best een potje sturen, maar kampioen... nee, dat gaat nooit gebeuren. Zelfs niet met een Mercedes die helemaal op hem gemaakt is. Als pa Stroll serieus kampioen wil worden met Aston Martin heeft hij een coureur met écht talent nodig. Een Vettel, Hamilton, Leclerc, Verstappen, Ricciardo of wellicht zelfs een Sainz of Russel. Maar Stroll jr? Nee echt niet!
