Racing Point/Aston Martin ambieert de rol van reuzendoder

Het team van Racing Point probeert al jaren met een bescheiden budget tegen de gevestigde orde op te boksen. Dat lukt de renstal vrij aardig, gezien de vierde plaatsen in het constructeurskampioenschap in 2016 en 2017 toen het nog Force India heette. In 2021 breekt een nieuw tijdperk aan. Niet alleen voor het team, dat omgedoopt wordt tot Aston Martin, maar ook voor de Formule 1 met de invoering van een budgetlimiet.

Dat moet het voor Racing Point/Aston Martin alleen maar makkelijker maken om het leven van de topteams zuur te maken. De renstal is immers al gewend aan het opereren met een lagere begroting en kan zich opwerpen als reuzendoder, stelt technisch directeur Andrew Green in de Formule 1-podcast Beyond the Grid. Hij verwacht dan ook dat het team onder de nieuwe reglementen aan kan haken bij de top drie.

"Als je me vorig jaar gevraagd had of we ons personeelsbestand uit zouden moeten breiden van 450 naar 800 personeel om een kans te maken, dan had ik ja geantwoord. Maar nu niet meer", begint Green. "In het huidige klimaat en met de nieuwe regels die op komst zijn hoeft dat niet. De grote teams zijn nu dinosauriërs; je moet als organisatie nu klein, flexibel en efficiënt zijn. Dat is juist onze kracht."

Reuzendoder

Dat maakt Racing Point/Aston Martin bij uitstek geschikt om de topteams Mercedes, Red Bull Racing en Ferrari te verschalken. De verhoudingen veranderen; het is niet langer een kwestie van David tegen Goliath. Green "Wat de financiële reglementen betreft, die bewegen onze richting op. De nieuwe regels zullen ons in staat stellen om ons te meten met wat voorheen de grote teams waren, want in de nieuwe situatie zijn er geen grote teams meer. Ze moeten afschalen en op ons niveau opereren."

Ik vind dat roze eigenlijk wel verfrissend, niet om de kleur roze, maar puur omdat ik het zwart en grijs wel gezien heb....

MB geeft veel geld uit aan titelwinnende auto en RP bespaart door die te kopiëren. Als RP net zoveel geld had als RB, MB en Ferrari, dan hadden ze echt wel het team uitgebreid.

  Nja, die gekopieerde wagen heeft nog geen meter geraced.
  
  Heb altijd gevonden dat RP (FI vroeger) zeer knappe dingen toonde met veel beperktere middelen. Daar doe ik mijn hoedje voor af en ik mag het team wel.
  
  De BYTG episode is overigens best interessant met leuke anekdotes over Perez, Schumacher, E. Jordan en Stroll Sr.

Ik denk ook dat RP snel geen RP meer is, maar een hybride tussen Mercedes en RP, met Aston Martin als merk op de motorkap. Ze trekken steeds meer kennis uit Mercedes en ik denk dat Wolff na dit jaar overstapt en daar de regie gaat voeren zoals hij dat tot op heden doet bij Mercedes. En dan wordt het vanaf 2022 met nieuwe reglementen en compleet nieuwe auto's een serieus team voor op de grid.
Ik hoop wel dat tegen die tijd dat roze van de auto's af is, vind ik niet om aan te gapen.

  Juist dat roze heb ik geen bezwaar tegen. Beetje felle lawaai kleur mag gerust met alle zwarte witte of grijze auto's op de grid. M'n enige bezwaar is dat een stoeltje voor Lance nodig is om het team op de grid te houden

  Dat roze onderscheidt de auto vd rest. De kleur roze als blouse, viltstift of tafellaken vind ik niet bepaald mooi haha, maar zo als in deze livery vind ik het absoluut cool. Het is ook echt een 'total livery' zoals vroeger.

  Weinig problemen met het roze. Wel met het feit dat ze zo goed als dezelfde livery bleven gebruiken terwijl de naam van het team veranderd was.

Dat lukte toen alleen omdat ze meer geld uitgaven dan hun budget. Daarom moesten ze ook gered worden.
