Renault: "Valtteri Bottas en Sebastian Vettel serieuze opties"

Renault-teambaas Cyril Abiteboul ontkent dat Fernando Alonso in 2021 met Renault terugkeert naar de Formule 1. De teambaas gaf een krachtig 'nee' uit toen hij door L'Equipe werd gevraagd naar de kandidatuur van de Spanjaard voor de stoel die door Daniel Ricciardo vrijkomt bij het Franse team.

Valtteri Bottas en Sebastian Vettel zijn echter nog steeds opties. Abiteboul: "Het team heeft een ervaren coureur nodig die in staat is om het project uit te voeren en vooral met grote motivatie. We willen dat iemand zich aan ons verbindt voor langere tijd."

Lijst met kandidaten

De lijst met kandidaten voor Renault werd besproken door Canal Plus. Daarop staan ervaren coureurs waaronder Alonso, Vettel, Bottas en Renault-junioren Christian Lundgaard en Guanyu Zhou.

"Het is een goede lijst, met enkele moeilijkheden, vooral voor onze jonge coureurs. Om hun superlicentie te behalen, moeten ze in de top vier zitten en de top vier zal waarschijnlijk erg laat worden beslist. Het zou Abu Dhabi kunnen zijn, en we weten nog niet wanneer we racen in Abu Dhabi", zei Abiteboul.

Geld voor salaris speelt een rol

Fernando Alonso werd meteen genoemd bij Renault maar volgens Abiteboul wil de Spanjaard niet tot december wachten om een contract te tekenen. De lijst is echter langer dan Alonso, want ook Vettel staat erop. Beide coureurs zullen echter niet voor een appel en een ei gaan rijden. Geld speelt een belangrijke rol in de keuze van de opvolger van Ricciardo.

"Ik ga niet in op onze financiële situatie, hoewel het onze prioriteit is om te investeren in de infrastructuur van het team. Vettel is na 2020 gratis op te halen en als hij zeer gemotiveerd is om door te gaan in de Formule 1, kan hij ook interessant voor ons zijn. We willen Esteban Ocon niet onder druk zetten, we rekenen uiteraard op hem voor de toekomst. Hij moet laten zien dat hij zijn plaats verdient en voor de volgende seizoenen hebben we onze academie met jonge talenten die we vertrouwen."

Gevraagd naar Bottas, die mogelijk aan het einde van het jaar moet vertrekken bij Mercedes, zei Abiteboul: "Hij heeft Hamilton wat moeilijke tijden bezorgd, dat heeft niet iedereen kunnen doen. Nico Rosberg was kampioen, maar tegen welke prijs? Daarna is hij gestopt in F1. Bottas heeft nog niet gewonnen, maar hij kan nog veel brengen en dat wil hij laten zien."

Gezien hun financiële situatie hebben ze waarschijnlijk gewoon een paydriver nodig, die zit een beetje veel in zijn eigen droomwereld, denkend aan de "big boys"

  Volgens mij zitten ze bij Renault, ondanks de Corona-crisis, bij het F1 team niet om geld verlegen. Sowieso heb ik het gevoel dat de autofabrikanten deze periode gebruiken om eens goedkoop En gemakkelijk te saneren. Bij Renault betalen ze dadelijk gewoon een dikke duit voor Vettel.

Je kan er weinig uithalen maar het voelt alsof hij nog wel enige interesse in Vettel heeft.
Het feit dat hij benoemd dat Alonso niet tot December wil wachten doet toch vermoeden dat ze echt serieus hopen dat ze een spotgoedkope rookie kunnen nemen mits deze voldoende licentiepunten kan sprokkelen.
Als dat het geval is wordt direct duidelijk dat Renault ook de komende jaren niet meer voor een titel of podium gaat maar uitsluitend voor de Olympische gedacht meedoet. Als je maar de top wil in de komende
twee jaar dan ga je niet hopen op Lundgaard of Deng Xiaoping.

En bottas zal lekker afwachten want daar waar hij wordt vervangen daar kan hij naartoe.

Als ik de boul samenvat zoekt Cyril een ervaren coureur:
- voor langere tijd;
- gemotiveerd;
- bereid tot december te wachten;
- goedkoop;
- die Ocon niet onder druk zet.

  Ik zie het zelfs nog wel gebeuren dat Grosjean terugkeert naar Renault. Volledige Franse slag. Ocon zal nooit echt bedreigd worden door Grosjean aangezien Grosjean al van de baan spint zodra Ericsson in de buurt komt.
