Vietnam wil eerste Grand Prix ooit alsnog in november inhalen

Een flink aantal berichten op social media vorige week suggereerden dat een aankondiging over de Grand Prix van Vietnam aanstaande was. Tijdens het Grand Prix weekend in Oostenrijk waren er echter geen updates en bleef het stil in de paddock van Spielberg over Vietnam.

Vietnam zou voor het eerst in de geschiedenis een Formule 1-race organiseren op 5 april van dit jaar. Het evenement werd echter op 13 maart uitgesteld vanwege de uitbraak van het coronavirus die op dat moment een hoogtepunt had bereikt met de stad Hanoi dat 121 besmettingen kende.

Vandaag onthulde Nguyen Duc Chung, voorzitter van Hanoi, een bijeenkomst van de gemeenteraad van de stad dat Hanoi: "We zullen een grondige beoordeling maken van alle corona gerelateerde zaken en onderhandelen met het organisatiecomité zodat de race eind november alsnog kan plaatsvinden."

Er kan echter vooruit gekeken worden in Vietnam, nu er bijna 90 dagen geen binnenlandse corona besmettingen zijn vastgesteld en het sociale en economische leven weer is opgestart.

Nieuwe races worden snel bekend

Chase Carey zei in het weekend dat hij hoopte het volgende 'blok' van races binnen enkele weken officieel bekend gemaakt kan worden.

Nu de races in de Verenigde Staten, Mexico en Brazilië twijfelachtig lijken, wordt verwacht dat er naast de races in Bahrein en Abu Dhabi nog meer Europese races zullen worden aangekondigd. Men denkt nog steeds dat er in China geracet kan worden, terwijl Rusland ook mogelijkheid is.

Nieuwe corona uitbraak Zuid-Europa

Veel ogen zijn sinds enkele dagen ook gericht op Zuid-Europa. De Grand Prix van Italië op Monza is de achtste race en ook de negende race zou in dat land gehouden worden, maar dan op het circuit van Mugello. De laatste dagen zijn de besmettingen met corona echter verdubbeld.

Spanje en Portugal kennen een soortgelijk probleem alleen dan lokaal. In Spanje zijn twee regio's in lockdown geplaatst en in Portugal zijn er rond Lissabon en Porto ineens een verdubbeling aan uitbraken en hebben diverse regeringen het reisadvies aangepast.

De Grand Prix van Spanje staat op de kalender gepland op 16 augustus, terwijl Portugal in onderhandeling is voor één of twee races op het circuit van Portimao.

Waarom zou je extra risico lopen in een enorme stad terwijl je elders gewoon veilig met z'n allen op een circuit kan bubbelen?
