Amerika en Mexico begrijpen beslissing van FOM

Organisatoren in Austin en Mexico zeggen dat ze het besluit van de Formule 1 accepteren om hun races voor 2020 te annuleren. Brazilië, de derde geannuleerde race op de Amerikaanse continenten, dreigt Liberty Media te vervolgen vanwege het besluit en beweert dat de pandemie geen geval van 'overmacht' is.

Bob Bobby Epstein, voorzitter van het Amerikaanse Circuit of the Americas, zegt het besluit van de F1 te begrijpen. Hij snapt waarom de FOM deze beslissing moest nemen: "De annulering is verstandig, maar pijnlijk. Dit gaat niet over sport of de economie van een bedrijf. Dit gaat over gezondheid en een pandemie en een wereldwijde crisis."

Hij hoopt dat Austin de Formule 1 voor een lange tijd blijft hosten in de toekomst. Epstein: "Dat is de bedoeling. Ik denk niet dat we ooit de bedoeling hadden dat dit na 10 races klaar zou zijn."

Wat Mexico betreft wordt de Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez momenteel gebruikt als drive-in-bioscoop en een tijdelijk Covid-19-ziekenhuis. Racedircteur Federico Gonzalez: "We doen er alles aan om al het nodige te doen om de veiligste ervaring voor alle fans te garanderen en dat is de reden om onze race te annuleren. Naast het garanderen van de veiligheid van iedereen die aanwezig was, is dit besluit om alle betrokkenen vrede te geven en ook om te voldoen aan de richtlijnen van de nationale autoriteiten."
