Ocon rijdt Raikkonen in de weg: "Resultaat was niet anders geweest"

Kimi Raikkonen klaagt al een aantal weken over de snelheid van zijn bolide. De ervaren coureur baalt ervan dat hij niet mee kan strijden met het middenveld, want hij wil graag racen om de punten. Ondanks alles denkt zijn teambaas dat het racetempo goed genoeg is om vandaag in de punten te komen. De kwalificatie voor dit weekend was minder, maar dat weten ze inmiddels bij Alfa Romeo.

Het team doet er alles aan om de auto’s te verbeteren, maar na het Ferrari-akkefietje lukt het de teams met een Ferrari-motor maar moeilijk om hoog op de grid te komen, terwijl de Mercedessen en de Honda’s telkens maar verbeteren, zelfs de Renault-motoren staan nu hoger op de grid.

Ocon houdt Raikkonen op

De slechte kwalificatie lag volgens Kimi Raikkonen niet helemaal aan de auto, want hij werd opgehouden door Esteban Ocon. De Renault-coureur moest samen met Raikkonen naar de stewards, die uiteindelijk besloten om verder geen maatregelen te nemen.

Kimi zou Kimi niet zijn als hij zijn oprechte mening laat horen, want hij vond het wel irritant en hinderlijk. Hij geeft echter zelf wel toe dat het resultaat niet anders was geweest. "De auto was dit weekend sterker, ik had er een goed gevoel bij en de wegligging was goed, maar het is duidelijk dat we nog iets missen. Ik had wat hoger op de grid kunnen staan, maar ik werd opgehouden in de laatste bocht hoewel het eindresultaat in alle eerlijkheid niet te veel anders zou zijn geweest."

Kimi Raikkonen, die oudste coureur op de grid, weet dat het team nog wat werk te doen heeft en is van mening dat ze deze stijgende lijn vast moeten houden. "We hebben dingen om als team aan te werken, we hebben verbeteringen aangebracht, maar we moeten deze richting blijven volgen. De race van zondag zou interessant moeten zijn: ik verwacht van ons dat we beter zijn en we moeten vechten voor een plek in de top tien."

Kimi Raikkonen start vanaf de zeventiende plek na een straf van Russell. Om in de punten te komen moet hij dus minimaal in de top tien komen, wat hem al vaker is gelukt. Het incident tussen Ocon en Kimi is hieronder te zien.
