Mark Smith is vandaag eindelijk aan de slag gegaan als nieuwe technisch directeur bij Team Lotus. De Maleisische renstal had hem in juni vorig jaar al vastgelegd, maar moest noodgedwongen wachten door contractuele verplichtingen die Smith met zijn vorige werkgever Force India had.

Smith: Ik ben zeer opgewonden over de uitdaging die voor me ligt bij Team Lotus. Ik ben voor de eerste keer in de fabriek geweest en ik was onder de indruk van wat ik op alle afdelingen zag. In mijn carrière heb ik interessante periodes doorgebracht bij Jordan, Renault, Red Bull Racing en Force India, en ik heb ervaring met het winnen van races.

Echter, ik ben nooit betrokken geweest bij de winst van een kampioenschap en dat is een van de doelen die ik met Team Lotus voor ogen heb. Ik was oprecht geïmponeerd door de manier waarop dit team in 2010 debuteerde, met een goede functionele auto en een professionele organisatie. De fundering voor succes op de lange termijn ligt er en ik kijk ernaar uit om nog jaren bij te dragen aan het bereiken van de doelen van Team Lotus.
