Ecclestone: "Dit had Silverstone tien jaar geleden al moeten doen"

Bernie Ecclestone kon gisteren niet aanwezig zijn bij de officiële opening van het nieuwe pit- en paddockcomplex The Wing op het circuit van Silverstone, maar de Brit deelde wel een complimentje uit. Al zou Ecclestone Ecclestone niet zijn als hij niet ook wat aan te merken zou hebben.

The Wing kan in elk geval op zijn goedkeuring rekenen, maar de nieuwe faciliteit kwam rijkelijk laat. Ecclestone stelde in een verklaring voor Silverstone: Het spijt me dat ik niet bij deze belangrijke gelegenheid voor de Formule 1 en Silverstone kon zijn. Het nieuwe complex vormt de ruggengraat van Silverstone om een circuit van wereldklasse te zijn. Dit hadden ze tien jaar geleden al moeten doen.

Damon Hill, voorzitter van Silverstone-eigenaar BRDC: Bernie erkent dat Silverstone nu voldoet aan de eisen die hij aan circuits stelt. Bij de bouw hebben we ernstig rekening gehouden met zijn wensen. We hadden hem graag bij de opening gezien en we hadden hem ook uitgenodigd, maar we begrijpen dat hij het zeer druk heeft.
