Oud F1-teambaas Colin Kolles vindt het maar dom dat Vettel heeft getekend voor het team van Aston Martin F1 voor volgend seizoen. Zijn visie staat in schril contrast met die van F1-legende Gerhard Berger, die denkt dat de juiste beslissing is genomen omdat Vettel - in tegenstelling tot Sergio Perez en Lance Stroll - een race zou hebben kunnen winnen met de roze 2020-auto.

Ralf Schumacher denkt daar anders over.

"Als je naar de beelden van de ingebouwde camera kijkt, is de Racing Point erg stabiel. En dat is precies wat Sebastian altijd bekritiseerde bij de Ferrari", zei hij tegen Sky Deutschland.

Vettel zegt dat hij lang heeft nagedacht voordat hij de deal ondertekende.

"Ik zou een jaar vrij hebben genomen om te zien welke kansen er zijn in 2022", vertelde voormalig Force India-teambaas Colin Kolles aan f1-insider.com.

"Het is maar afwachten of de Aston Martin volgend jaar weer even goed zal zijn na de 'copygate'-affaire en de nieuwe regels die daarop volgden", aldus Kolles.

"Wat de reputatie van Vettel betreft, zijn rampzalige seizoen bij Ferrari zou snel worden vergeten, dus ik zou in zijn plaats een jaar vrij hebben genomen", zei Kolles.

Vettel beweert dat de zaak rond de 'roze Mercedes' geen "grote rol" speelde bij zijn afweging om te gaan rijden bij het team dat vroeger bekend was onder de naam Jordan en later Force India.

Vettel: "Het was geen gemakkelijke beslissing voor mij. Maar ik had het gevoel dat ik in de Formule 1 wilde blijven en ook in de nieuwe auto's uit 2022 wilde rijden met reglementen die meer gelijke kansen bieden. De timing was precies goed", zei de viervoudig wereldkampioen.

Vettel zei ook: "Het team heeft nu al een geweldige auto en het zal volgend jaar niet anders zijn. Ik weet dat we in 2021 goede races kunnen rijden. Hoe sterk we zijn vergeleken met de concurrentie, weet ik nog niet. "

Kolles roerde zich al eerder in de perikelen rondom Ferrari en Vettel. Ook wist Kolles veel meer dan de rest van de wereld over de 'rel rond de roze-Mercedes'.

Vanaf 2021 al onderdeel zijn van het team is juist goed. Nu kan Vettel betrokken worden in de ontwikkeling van de nieuwe auto voor 2022. Kan alleen maar positief uitwerken. En 2021 is een mooi jaar om Vettel in te werken in het team en een goede samenwerking met zijn race engineer op te bouwen.

Ik ben benieuwd wat Seb met die auto kan...schijnt een stabiele achterkant te hebben en dat past blijkbaar bij zijn rijstijl. Ik zeg een goede keuze!

  Vettel in de juiste omgeving en een auto waar hij zich prettig in voelt is zeer gevaarlijk. Zijn probleem is dat hij gefrustreerd raakt als het niet werkt en fouten gaat maken. Maar als hij ipv Hamilton in de Mercedes had gezeten, had hij het beter gedaan dan Hamilton nu.

Jammer dat hij niet bij RedBull gaat rijden. Hij had een prima teamgenoot voor Max kunnen zijn.

Wie ben ik om het oneens te zijn met een echte F1 kenner.. Maar zogenaamd sabbatical is wel de grootste kans dat je uberhaupt niet meer terug komt, en de keuze voor RP lijkt me ook niet zo verkeerd gezien de ambitie van Pa Stroll , die wil echt serieus mee gaan doen om de podiumplekken.. Nee, ben geen fan van Vettel maar dit is geen verkeerd besluit, zeg ik als leek...

Het doel voor Vettel moet niet 2021 zijn, maar de periode daarna.
Ik zie alleen maar goede redenen dus om geen jaartje pauze te pakken.
