Simon Roberts weet niet hoe lang hij teambaas van Williams blijft

De waarnemend teambaas van Williams zegt dat hij niet zeker weet of zijn nieuwe rol omgezet zal worden in een definitieve aanstelling. Simon Roberts, die slechts drie maanden geleden een overstap maakte van McLaren naar Williams, heeft een verrassend snelle promotie gekregen om de vertrokken teambaas Claire Williams op te volgen.

Roberts, die bijna 17 jaar operationeel directeur en chief operating officer was bij McLaren, geeft toe dat de snelheid van de verkoop van Williams hem ook overrompelde. In Mugello zei hij tegen Reuters: "De snelheid van de verkoop verraste iedereen, we hadden helemaal niet het gevoel dat dit ging gebeuren. Ik had graag gezien dat Claire bleef, hoewel ik begrijp waarom ze er zeker van is dat haar beslissing juist is. Iedereen zal haar missen."

Totale verrassing

Op de vraag of hij verwachtte dat hij slechts drie maanden na zijn vertrek bij McLaren een F1-teambaas zou worden, antwoordde Roberts: "Ik zeker niet. Ik kwam voor de functie van algemeen directeur, wat echt bij mij past, en ik was vastbesloten om samen te werken met Claire en Mike O'Driscoll."

Vijf dagen geleden kondigde O'Driscoll aan met pensioen te willen gaan.

"In de Formule 1 kunnen veranderingen heel snel gebeuren en het is zo moeilijk om te voorspellen wat ons te wachten staat. Gezien het niveau waarop het team zich nu bevindt, begrijpen we allemaal dat ons werk nog maar net begint."

Toen hem werd gevraagd of het label 'waarnemend' binnenkort van zijn huidige titel van teambaas zal worden verwijderd, gaf hij toe: "Om eerlijk te zijn, hebben we dit helemaal niet besproken. Ik heb de nieuwe eigenaren van het team al ontmoet, maar voorlopig is dit niet het belangrijkste. Het belangrijkste is om de stabiliteit te behouden, met al onze mensen samen te werken en vooruit te komen."
