Vettel voelt mee met Williams: "Russell heeft hard gevochten en geen punten"

Sebastian Vettel sympathiseerde met George Russell nadat de Williams-coureur net zijn eerste WK-punt miste. Russell moet tijdens zijn Formule 1-carrière nog in de top 10 eindigen, maar dat ligt niet direct aan hemzelf want Williams is altijd één van de langzaamste teams op de grid geweest.

Met veel coureurs die in Mugello in korte tijd uit de race lagen was Russell op koers om zijn lange wachten op punten te beëindigen totdat een tweede rode vlag die kans teniet deed. Na de zware crash van Lance Stroll konden de auto's achter hem zonder moeite een inhaalpoging doen en helaas kon Russell na een slechte herstart geen weg vinden langs Vettel voor die laatste puntenpositie.

Russell verdiende de punten

Russell zei dat hij met heel zijn hart heeft gereden in Toscane en Vettel had uiteindelijk medelijden met hem. De viervoudig kampioen zei tegen Ziggo: "Ik wist dat Russell achter mij reed, ik had een beetje medelijden met hem. Hij reed heel goed, vooral voor de laatste herstart. Hij was sneller dan wij, hij was consistenter en hij reed een goede race."

"Ik kon zien wat hij aan het doen was. Die punten komen echt wel. Arme kerel! Ik denk dat hij echt een punt verdiende. Ik heb echt medelijden met hem, want hij had punten verdiend. Hij vocht zich een weg omhoog door de punten en kreeg niet het resultaat dat hij verdiende."

Russell zag de vriendelijke woorden van Vettel op sociale media en bedankte hem voor wat hij zei.

  Even leek Russel opweg naar 2 punten en daarmee volgens mij ook P8 voor Williams in het kampioenschap door het aantal 11de plaatsen. Maarja... slechte herstart... vooral in vergelijk met Kimi.

Hoewel ik fan ben van George Russell, vind ik het erger dat hij sneller was dan Ferrari, en das nie goe.

  Begrijp me niet verkeerd, ik gun Williams natuurlijk 'n flinke bal met punten, maar ik bedoelde eigenlijk dat Ferrari verleden jaar nog race's won en nu rijden ze met de lantaarn rond en moeten ze strijden met teams die achteraan rijden.
