Aston Martin contracteert voormalig marketing manager van basketballer Michael Jordan

Racing Point heeft aangekondigd dat 'zwaargewicht uit de industrie' Jefferson Slack met onmiddellijke ingang het team zal versterken als managing director van de commerciële en marketing afdeling. In zijn 30 jaar ervaring in de branche heeft Slack de marketingactiviteiten geleid van basketballegende Michael Jordan en werd hij in 2000 de eerste Amerikaanse CEO van een 'Europese topvoetbalclub' met Inter Milan.

Wat betreft ervaring in de motorsport werkte Slack recentelijk in een commerciële adviserende rol voor Dorna, de commerciële rechtenhouder voor MotoGP.

In zijn nieuwe rol bij Racing Point wordt Slack verantwoordelijk voor alle commerciële en marketingactiviteiten en zal hij rechtstreeks rapporteren aan teambaas Otmar Szafnauer terwijl het team evolueert naar Aston Martin in 2021. De Amerikaan vertelt: "Ik denk dat dit een van de meest opwindende commerciële kansen is, niet alleen in de Formule 1, maar in de hele sportindustrie. We zijn op zoek naar een iconisch nieuw sportmerk in het Aston Martin F1 Team en in het proces geloven we dat we een uniek wereldwijd marketingplatform zullen creëren voor andere merken en partners."

"Ik kijk er naar uit om met Lawrence en Otmar samen te werken en een commercieel en marketingteam van wereldklasse op te bouwen."

Teameigenaar Lawrence Stroll reageerde op de benoeming van Slack: "Met de vooruitgang die we dit seizoen op het circuit hebben geboekt en met onze aanstaande herlancering als Aston Martin F1 Team, hebben we een unieke kans om een iconisch nieuw sportteam te creëren dat voorop loopt in de Formule 1."

"We zijn verheugd Jefferson Slack aan te stellen om ons te helpen de volledige wereldwijde commerciële en marketingkansen te realiseren die ons te wachten staan."

Zo te horen weet Stroll Sr. goed waar hij mee bezig is. Het 'vermarkten' van je sportmerk is iets waarin Williams & Mclaren met hun historie en reputatie heeft verzaakt en waar Haas - met de Noord-Amerikaanse markt - het tot nu toe heeft laten liggen. Geldt overigens ook voor Renault, hoewel ze hun best doen, maar wellicht dat dat volgend jaar met Alpine beter gaat.

Je ziet bij de drie grote teams (Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull) dat brand marketing zorgt voor een grotere fanbase met dito merchandise-omzetten. Zeker ook als je een aansprekende naam hebt in je team (Lewis bij MER en Max bij RBR, LEC heeft die status (nog) niet bij FER) kan je een totaalbeleving creëren die meer mensen aanspreekt dan de die-hard F1 fan. Daardoor zijn bedrijven sneller geïnteresseerd om als sponsor op te treden en dat zorgt weer voor extra inkomsten.

Als ze dit voor een lange(re) termijn volhouden (en de juiste keuzes maken), dan voorzie ik voor Racing Point wel een zelfde scenario als toen Stewart/Jaguar omgevormd werd tot Red Bull Racing. Dan is het alleen nog een succesvolle auto bouwen waarmee ze (structureel) aansluiting kunnen vinden bij de (sub)top.
