Bernie Ecclestone: "Stefano Domenicali vroeg mij om advies en is een goede kerel"

Toto Wolff, Christian Horner en ongetwijfeld anderen willen al jaren heel graag de nieuwe F1-supremo worden. Toen Liberty Media de F1 overnam en Ecclestone vertrok aasden zowel Wolff als Horner op de baan. Christian Horner was zo goed als rond om de opvolger van Ecclestone te worden, tot Toto Wolff lucht daarvan kreeg en hij ineens de belangrijkste gegadigde werd.

Uiteindelijk kwam de opvolger van de 'grote kleine man' bij Liberty zelf vandaan; Chase Carey - die man met de bijzondere snor. Ook Carey staat echter op het punt van vertrekken en gisteren werd ineens bekend dat voormalig Ferrari-teambaas Stefano Domenicali de nieuwe baas van de F1 wordt en Carey zal opvolgen.

Is Domenicali sterk genoeg?

De man die de Formule 1 groot maakte is Bernie Ecclestone en hij heeft lovende woorden voor Domenicali. Het is volgens de 89-jarige Ecclestone een goede kerel. De 89-jarige voormalige F1-CEO Ecclestone werd in 2017 verdreven door zijn opvolger Chase Carey in de nasleep van de overname van de sport door Liberty Media.

Ecclestone en Carey konden nooit met elkaar overweg, maar toen hem werd gevraagd naar het nieuws dat Carey naar verwachting in 2021 zal worden vervangen door Stefano Domenicali, zei Ecclestone dat de Italiaan 'een goede kerel' is. Ecclestone: "Stefano vroeg me om advies. Hij is een goede man om te vertrouwen. Hij heeft ook heel goede contacten. Of hij in kritieke tijden sterk genoeg is, valt nog te bezien."

Ecclestone woont in Zwitserland

Ecclestone is momenteel met zijn vrouw Fabiana en hun 12 weken oude zoon Ace in Zwitserland. "We zijn zo blij dat we hier in Gstaad al meer dan 30 jaar een veilig thuis hebben. De corona-hel is nog steeds gaande in Engeland en in Brazilië."

Ik mocht die Domenicali wel, lijkt mij inderdaad een prima kerel.

Maar het blijft alleen wel zo dat er te veel ex-Ferrari kopstukken op belangrijke posities van de F1 organisatie zitten en dat kan de schijn van partijdigheid geven.

  Ach, ze hebben nu ook al een aantal ex-Ferrari kopstukken bij de FIA en dat helpt nog niet heel erg. Ik denk dat ze er weinig baat bij hebben.
