Vasseur wil nieuw contract Raikkonen niet bevestigen

Frederic Vasseur heeft geweigerd te zeggen of Kimi Raikkonen al een contract heeft getekend om in 2021 bij Alfa Romeo te blijven. Er wordt nu steeds meer verwacht dat de 40-jarige Raikkonen bij het Italiaanse team zal blijven om een ervaren teamgenoot te zijn voor de waarschijnlijke F1-debutant Mick Schumacher.

Geruchten in Sochi gaven aan dat Raikkonen inmiddels een nieuw contract heeft getekend. Tegen Championat zei Vasseur: "Heb ik de geruchten gelezen dat Kimi al getekend heeft? Zeker! Maar twee weken geleden schreven ze over Hulkenberg, drie weken geleden ging het over Perez, vorige week over Vettel. Journalisten kunnen schrijven wat ze willen, maar het heeft geen enkele invloed op mijn beslissing."

Vasseur gaf echter ook toe dat Ferrari in 2021 zeggenschap zal hebben over welke coureur in het tweede stoeltje komt te zitten bij Alfa Romeo: "We hebben geen deadline gesteld. We zullen de komende weken met Kimi praten om te zien wat de volgende stap is die we samen zetten."

"Wat betreft de tweede stoel zullen we discussies hebben met Ferrari en een beslissing nemen in de komende maanden. Er zijn veel goede coureurs beschikbaar, maar allereerst moet ik alles bespreken met de jongens die nu in het team zitten. Ondanks de moeilijke eerste seizoenshelft hebben ze hun werk goed gedaan met teamwork, dat is erg belangrijk voor mij."

  Kimi een goede benchmark? Verlies je van hem ben je niets. Win je van hem.... zou je alsnog niet veel kunnen zijn, want winnen van Kimi is een vrij lage lat. Sinds dat laatste jaar bij Lotus. De man heeft al jaren de snelheid niet meer.

  @Xao: daar ben ik het niet helemaal mee eens. Kimi is tuurlijk niet meer de Kimi zoals bij McLaren en 1e Ferrari run. Heeft ondertussen een vracht aan ervaring en constante racesnelheid (zn zaterdagen zijn vaak flut, maar zondagen wilt hij nog best naar voren rijden).
  Als teamgenoot van Kimi zou je Kimi wel moeten bijhouden, in race en kwalificatie. Lukt het je niet om Kimi bij te houden, dan lijkt het wel alsof je te licht bent voor F1. Als je Kimi wel kan verslaan, dan ben je prima F1 materiaal. Al zal deze stelling hooguit voor dit jaar en volgend jaar gelden, want de beste man zal daarna waarschijnlijk wel wat inleveren aan snelheid en scherpte.

mij bekruipt het gevoel dat de line-up van Alfa voor 2021 allang vastligt, Kimi & Mick, maar (zoals gewoonlijk) het alleen nog gaat over het tijdstip van bekendmaking
