Mick Schumacher teleurgesteld na gisteren: "Had graag willen rijden"

Voor alle rijders was de vrijdag een verloren dag. De trainingen werden afgelast, omdat de medische helikopters door de mist niet konden opstijgen. Mick Schumacher baalde misschien wel het meeste. Zijn officiële Formule 1-debuut in eigen land viel in het water.

Het zou een bijzondere dag worden als 20-jarige coureur. Aan de start van zijn officiële debuut in de Formule 1, in de voetsporen van zijn vader, op de baan waar vader Michael Schumacher erg succesvol was. Mick stond te popelen om voor het thuispubliek de baan op te rijden. Maar de blijdschap sloeg langzaam om in steeds meer teleurstelling, omdat de weersverwachting maar niet beter werd.

Uiteindelijk stond de Ferrari-protégé de hele training aan de kant. : Natuurlijk had ik heel graag willen rijden", zegt de kersverse Alfa Romeo-coureur. "Maar toch ben ik blij dat ik hier ben en samen te werken met het team. Ook doet het mij goed om de fans te zien, al moet ik wel 'sorry' zeggen voor het feit dat we de baan niet konden opkomen. Uiteindelijk staat veiligheid voorop."

Ondanks dat Mick Schumacher geen enkele meter heeft gereden, was het voor hem leerzaam. "Het was toch een nuttige dag. Ik heb geprobeerd om zo veel mogelijk ervaring op te doen. Dat was mijn doel voor het weekend. Het is jammer dat ik geen data heb kunnen verzamelen voor het team, maar toch ben ik blij om van dichtbij te zien hoe er wordt gewerkt tijdens een raceweekend."

Of er een nieuwe mogelijkheid komt dit jaar voor Mick Schumacher, is onzeker. "We weten niet wat de toekomst gaat brengen. Maar hopelijk krijg ik weer een kans om een aantal ronden te doen," vervolgt de pupil van de Ferrari Driver Acedemy.

Vorige week reed de Duitser nog wel op Fiorona in een de 2018-wagen van Ferrari ter voorbereiding. Dit deed hij samen met twee andere talenten van de opleiding, Robert Shwartzman en Callum Ilott.

Mick Schumacher komt sowieso weer in actie in Bahrein eind november. Daar zijn de volgende races van het F2-kampioenschap. Op dit moment staat de coureur bovenaan in de stand.
