Istanboel legt nieuw asfalt voor F1-race en wil jaarlijkse terugkeer op F1-kalender

Istanbul Park wil dat Turkije fulltime terugkeert naar de Formule 1-kalender. Na een afwezigheid staat het populaire circuit dit jaar weer op de 'coronakalender'. Maar net als de andere tijdelijke evenementen, waaronder Mugello, Portimao en Imola, is het een eenmalig evenement voor 2020.

"Ons doel is om volgend jaar een langetermijnovereenkomst te ondertekenen en permanent aan de kalender deel te nemen. Het moet duidelijk gebeuren met een duurzaam economisch model", vertelde Vural Ak, baas van de Istanbul Park-circuitoperator Intercity, aan de Daily Sabah.

Istanbul had eigenlijk 100.000 toeschouwers gepland voor de race van 15 november, veruit het grootste publiek van 2020 tot nu toe. Maar de Turkse autoriteiten van op het gebied van de coronapandemie oordeelden vervolgens dat het eigenlijk een 'spookrace' moet zijn en nu mogen er dus helemaal geen toeschouwers meer komen.

Ak baalt van de situatie: "Natuurlijk waren we van streek. We hadden een hele goede evenementenomgeving gepland en het publiek zou een grote bijdrage hebben geleverd aan de sfeer. We hadden in een zeer korte tijd recordverkoop van tickets en de coureurs houden van de moeilijkheidsgraad van ons circuit. Daarom wilden ze ons op de kalender zetten, ook vanwege de prestaties van Turkije tijdens de pandemie."

"Als we de race van dit jaar met veel succes afronden, krijgen we de kans om direct na de race te gaan zitten en te praten over 2021 en daarna. We weten niet welke landen in Amerika en Azië kunnen terugkeren, maar op dit moment verkeren Amerika, Mexico en Brazilië in zeer slechte staat met de ziekte."

Ak zei dat hij zeker weet dat de coureurs van de race van volgende maand zullen genieten. "Het asfalt wordt momenteel vernieuwd. Ik denk dat de coureurs er dol op zullen zijn."

Mag van mij echt blijven en haal verdorie Maleisië er weer bij man!!!! Ze zijn echt helemaal van de pot gerukt daar bij de FIA! Hoe kun je zulke circuits nou niet bezoeken en wel naar dat saaie baantje in Paul Ricard gaan????

  Een nieuwe spekgladde asfaltlaag kan anders ook een aardigspektakel brengen. Vietnam is intussen bekend is van de kalender gehaald. Verleden tijd dus ;-)

Zou ik direct voor tekenen. Ik vind het een geweldig circuit. Als het niet zo’n saai seizoen was, zou ik echt naar deze race uitkijken.

Mag van mij echt blijven en haal verdorie Maleisië er weer bij man!!!! Ze zijn echt helemaal van de pot gerukt daar bij de FIA! Hoe kun je zulke circuits nou niet bezoeken en wel naar dat saaie baantje in Paul Ricard gaan????

  Maleisië wilde zelf niet meer. Naar eigen zeggen omdat vanwege de V6-motoren de interesse te ver zou zijn afgenomen.

Ik ben Turks en ben super blij dat het circuit weer terugkeert op het kalender van dit jaar. Wel heb ik mijn bedenkingen over de datum van 15 november. Istanbul heeft vergelijkbaar weer met Nederland en halverwege november kan het flink koud en nat zijn. Dus een regenrace zou het heel goed kunnen worden.

Doen! Ik was erbij in 2005 bij hun 1e Grand Prix. Istanbul is ook reuze interessant als je van geschiedenis en cultuur houdt.
