Het circuit van Portimão heet Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. Hier zal dit weekend de Grand Prix van Portugal worden verreden. Sinds 1996 is er geen Grand Prix meer verreden in dat land.

De eerste race in Portugal was in 1958 in Porto op het Circuito da Boavista, deze werd gewonnen door Stirling Moss.

De laatste Grand Prix in Portugal was op het circuit van Estoril, die race werd gewonnen door de Canadees Jacques Villeneuve. Nigel Mansell en Alain Prost wisten hier allebei drie overwinning te pakken en zijn daarmee recordhouders. Ayrton Senna pakte tijdens de Grand Prix van Portugal zijn eerste raceoverwinning van zijn Formule 1-carrière.

Het circuit in Portimao is 4,692 km lang en is sinds 2008 open. Het circuit is door zowel de FIM als de FIA goedgekeurd. Het circuit maakt normaalgesproken niet deel uit van de kalender van de MotoGP of de Formule 1, maar door het coronavirus besloot de Formule 1 naar Portugal te gaan. Op 24 juli werd aangekondigd dat er dit weekend op 25 oktober een race zou zijn. Het circuit is niet helemaal nieuw voor sommige coureurs of teams. Ferrari heeft er ooit getest en bijvoorbeeld George Russell heeft er een Formule 3-wedstrijd gereden.

Het circuit kent 15 bochten, maar de Formule 1 gebruikt er maar 14. De tweede bocht wordt namelijk afgesneden. Er worden 66 rondes gereden (als het goed is), de totale raceafstand komt dan op 306,825km. Het is een circuit met wat hoogteverschillen en ook een zwaar circuit voor de remmen en banden. Pirelli heeft daarom de C1, C2 en C3 band meegenomen naar Portugal. Het circuit is erg breed, soms wel 14 meter, wat helpt met het inhalen.
