Charles Leclerc jaloers op Sebastian Vettel: "Hij intimideerde mij"

Ferrari heeft twee topcoureurs in dienst, waarvan er eentje volgend seizoen vertrekt. Sebastian Vettel krijgt geen nieuw contract en wordt vervangen door Carlos Sainz van McLaren. Dat de relatie met zijn teamgenoot Charles Leclerc niet altijd even goed was, blijkt de schuld van de 23-jarige Monegask.

Tijdens verschillende races in het 2019-seizoen waren de twee met elkaar aan het vechten om een positie, wat niet altijd even goed ging. Soms duwden ze elkaar van de baan, maar soms kregen de coureurs een teamorder, waar de ander niet naar luisterde. Het was niet echt een perfecte relatie, maar dat kwam door Leclerc, zo legt hij uit: "Misschien was ik in het begin wat traag, maar dat was mijn schuld. Ik stond opeens naast een viervoudig wereldkampioen, wat me een beetje intimideerde. Hij had al zoveel gewonnen en ik had nog niets bereikt."

Gelukkig ging het tussen de twee snel beter, alleen zat de auto niet mee. Het 2020-seizoen is niet het seizoen waar de twee op hadden gehoopt. Gelukkig gaat het tussen de twee beter en dat is ook belangrijk. "Maar na verloop van tijd werd het veel beter. Er waren natuurlijk moeilijke momenten, maar buiten de baan was alles altijd goed tussen ons."

Geen advies

RTL Duitsland vroeg of Charles Leclerc nog een advies had voor de vertrekkende Sebastian Vettel naar Rcaing Point dat volgend jaar Aston Martin Racing gaat heten. "Ik hoef hem geen advies te geven. Hij heeft veel meer voor deze sport gedaan dan ik en hij verdient respect."

Leclerc zegt tot slot dat zijn relatie met de tien jaar oudere Vettel, die aan het einde van het jaar naar Aston Martin vertrekt, altijd 'heel goed' was. Dit weekend mogen de twee coureurs weer rijden. Na een weekend geen Formule 1, komen ze dit weekend in actie in Portugal op het Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimao.

Nee, Seb intimideerde Charles niet, Charles was geïntimideerd door Seb.
Dat is een wezenlijk verschil. De actie/emotie kwam niet vanuit Seb, maar vanuit Charles.

Als Sainz zijn rol als tweede rijder niet gaat accepteren, kan hij er zomaar achter komen hoe het voelt als je teamgenoot jou actief gaat intimideren.

  De Leclerc van nu is een heel andere Leclerc dan die van toen. Hij was eerst geïntimideerd, maar heeft zich daaroverheen gezet en Vettel uiteindelijk totaal verslagen. Nu is hij eerste man en nergens meer bang voor. En hij is sneller dan toen en gewoon in de basis ook sneller dan Sainz.
  En dat is waarom Sainz gehaald is: een goede tweede man.

Laten we hopen dat ze de Ferarri voor volgend seizoen goed aan de praat krijgen, zodat Charles pas echt kan laten zien wat hij in zijn mars heeft. De weg terug is inmiddels al ingezet en dat komt de sport wel degelijk ten goede.

In mijn ogen is het toch netjes hoe Leclerc hier over Vettel praat; niet alleen dat hij het zegt (dat kan uiteraard voor de bühne zijn), maar de woordkeuze is gewoon uitstekend!

  is wel slim ook die knaap, in de media niets dan mooie woorden en respect voor Seb, op de baan heeft Charles gehakt van hem gemaakt, vernederd, iets anders kan ik het niet noemen..
