Johnathan Hoggard rond test af met Red Bull Racing op Silverstone

Red Bull Racing geeft Red Bull Racing een F1-test weg. Dit gebeurt aan de winnaar van de Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award. In 2019 kreeg Johnathan Hoggard die prijs en mocht daarom dit jaar met een RB8 racen op Silverstone.

De jonge coureur had indruk gemaakt met de MSV Formula 2, Ligier LMP3 en een Aston Martin GT3-bolide. Naast de testsessie krijg hij ook nog eens een flinke envelop met geld, namelijk 200.000 dollar. De 19-jarige had niet de beste dag voor de test. Het was nat en moest daarom op regenbanden starten. Hij kon drie ronden van de regenbanden af en toen even flink op het gas trappen.

Motorsport.com interviewde de coureur na de testsessie op Silverstone. Eerst werd hem gevraagd of hij binnen 1,5 seconden van de rondetijden uit 2012 kwam. Daarom was zijn antwoord nee, want hij had geen gebruik gemaakt van KERS en had gebruikte Pirelli-banden. Ondanks alles was het voor hem een droom die uitkwam: "Het is een droom die uitkomt om in een F1-auto te rijden, vooral op het F1-circuit van Silverstone. Het leukste was hoeveel vermogen de auto had, vooral bij volgas. Je kunt de auto echt de baas zijn en hij blijft echt plakken aan de grond. Ik probeerde niets op tafel te laten liggen. Het zou een once-in-a-lifetime kans kunnen zijn, dus ik zou er spijt van hebben gehad als ik in mijn comfortzone was gebleven. Het was een kwestie van zelfverzekerd en verstandig zijn, goed opbouwen was het belangrijkste. Ik wil zonder moeite weer instappen."

Race engineer trots

De race engineer van Alexander Albon was bij de test aanwezig en was trots op Hoggard. "Hij heeft het goed gedaan. Door te zien hoe goed hij vorig jaar presteerde bij de Award-tests en zich aanpaste aan de drie auto's, verwachtte ik dat hij het goed zou doen en dat zette hij door. Hij ging er meteen mee door, er waren geen enge momenten en hij vorderde bij elke run. Elk advies dat we hem geven, zag je meteen terug in de volgende run."

Toch ook leuk voor de race engineer van Albon, die heeft het ook zwaar dit jaar. Fijn dat hij dan toch een keer een dagje trots kan zijn.
