Valtteri Bottas koos op gevoel voor gele banden tijdens Q3

Valtteri Bottas start morgen als tweede tijdens de Grand Prix van Portugal. De Fin reed in zijn Mercedes een prima ronde, maar werd zoals vaker het geval is, verslagen door zijn teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton. Hij baalde na afloop van de kwalificatie, doordat Hamilton op dezelfde gele banden een tiende sneller was en daarmee de pole pakte.

Waar de Mercedes-coureurs aanvankelijk op de rode band kwalificeerden in Q3, was het Bottas zelf die op gevoel koos om zijn laatste run op de gele band te rijden. Na afloop van de kwalificatie reageerde hij: "Uiteindelijk kozen we ervoor om op de gele band te kwalificeren tijdens de laatste poging voor pole position. Dat was mijn eigen gevoel. Voorheen voelde de gele band in de kwalificaties namelijk iets beter aan dan de zachte banden."

"Daarna moesten we kiezen of we twee snelle rondes achter elkaar zouden rijden of twee snelle rondes met een afkoelrondje ertussen. Bij die laatste optie heb je echter misschien weer last van het opwarmen van de banden. Ik ben ervoor gegaan het was mijn eigen beslissing om voor één snel rondje te gaan. Dat pakte goed uit in Q2 maar Lewis had succes met twee snelle rondes achter elkaar."

"Mijn rondje was goed, maar niet perfect. Het is ook best lastig om perfecte rondes te rijden op dit circuit. Het zou fijner zijn geweest om aan de schone kant van het circuit te starten, zoals de pole position, maar ik zal alles geven vanaf de tweede plaats om morgen te winnen."

Toch vreemd dat een gele band sneller is dan de rode tijdens de kwalificatie.
Credits naar Mercedes. Die hebben hier wel out of the box gedacht, zowel in Q2 als Q3 met geel, race starten op geel, daar waar RB zeer conservatief was.

Is het ooit eerder voorgekomen dat de niet zachtste band het snelste was in de kwalificatie?!? Ik kan het me niet herinneren.. Ik blijf het maar een vreemde situatie vinden hoor met de huidige Pirelli banden..

  Dat ding is zo uber dominant. Zonder Max en een illegale Ferrari verleden jaar was de sport al dood geweest.

  ik kan niet direct een voorbeeld noemen, maar volgens mij is het wel vaker gebeurd. Voor de pole zelf weet ik niet 100% zeker, maar zeker wel dat bepaalde coureurs in Q3 voor de hardere band kozen en sneller waren.

  Ik vraag me nu openlijk af hoe lang het nog duurt voordat de Mercs Q3 op de witte band gaan rijden, die spelen met iedereen zoals nu ook in Q2 en Q3 op geel.

  @hupholland. In dit geval wel. De rode band ging niet zo lekker als je zou willen. Dan is de gele band een groot risico. En als je dat niet aandurft omdat je je blijft aanhouden aan de normale omstandigheden dan is het conservatief ja. WC Max heeft gewoon gelijk.

  MIsschien wilde Max sowieso op rood starten, de banden zijn moeilijk op temperatuur te brengen, dus die gele al helemaal. We gaan het bij de start zien of de keuze van Merc wel zo "geweldig" was. En ik weet niet hoeveel gele banden Max nog had, maar nu zal hij iig een setje verse hebben voor de race, waar de punten worden verdeeld. Bovendien als je hetzelfde gaat doen als de beide Mercs, ben je minder kansrijk dan als je dat niet doet.

Nog door niemand opgemerkt maar dit is de eerste keer dat MB zonder DAS rijden in voorbereiding van volgend jaar. Hier was het op temperatuur brengen van de banden heel lastig en daarom geen slecht idee van Lewis om daar 2 snelle ronden op te doen. Stroll met 2 snelle ronden in FP was ook geen uitzondering..
