Verstappen op zoek naar juiste afstelling in Imola

Komend weekend rijdt de F1 voor het eerst sinds jaren in Imola. Het circuit in San Marino was vroeger steevast het decor van een plek op de F1-kalender maar de laatste jaren niet meer. Het beloofd een bijzonder weekend te worden, van slechts 2 dagen waarbij er op zaterdagochtend één vrije training is.

Red Bull-coureur Max Verstappen kijkt uit naar komend weekend maar zegt vooral dat het lastig zal worden om een goede afstelling te vinden voor de RB16: "Ik denk niet dat het eenvoudig zal zijn om de auto af te stellen, want we hebben maar één vrije training van anderhalf uur. Dat kan het interessant maken, vooral voor de ingenieurs!"

"Ik verwacht niet dat het tegen de klok inrijden een probleem zal zijn, ook al staan er maar een paar van zo’n circuits op de kalender. Maar deze baan is vrij smal en er zijn veel kerbstones die je moet nemen. Het wordt belangrijk om een goede compromis te vinden tussen topsnelheid op het lange rechte stuk en ook goed bochtenwerk om de kerbstones goed te kunnen nemen", zo zegt hij tegen Verstappen.com.

Goede setup nodig

"Ik kijk er echt naar uit om daar in een Formule 1-auto te racen. De laatste keer dat de Formule 1 er reed, was in 2006 en ik denk dat het circuit sindsdien een beetje is veranderd. Ik reed daar in de Formule 3 en heb er echt van genoten, vooral toen ik me tijdens de race door het veld omhoog werkte."

"Je hebt een flinke topsnelheid nodig en een goede set-up, maar er zijn enkele inhaalmogelijkheden. Natuurlijk is het in Formule 1-auto's moeilijker elkaar te volgen dan in Formule 3-auto's, dus inhalen zal niet gemakkelijk zijn, maar we zullen zien. Als we een goede kwalificatie kunnen rijden, hoeven we hopelijk niet veel in te halen. Ik denk dat Imola een hele gave toevoeging aan de kalender gaat worden."

Zal wel weer gewoon 3e worden. Met een beetje geluk 2e. en met heel veel geluk 1e. Zo gaat dat dit jaar. En volgend jaar denk ik ook.

Begint wel een beetje saai te worden. Hopenlijk volgend jaar lekker ´rellen´ met Ferrari/Mclaren. maar ik vrees dat dat niet gaat gebeuren. Pas vanaf 2022 zie ik kansen voor anderen. Dan moet je ook een beetje het geluk hebben dat je gelijk goed zit met de wagen. Maar zolang er geen nieuwe motor reglementen komen zie ik Mercedes wel nog domineren.

  Vanwege de benodigde topsnelheid verwacht ik minder van Ferrari, maar meer van Renault. Die deden het op Monza ook erg goed. Dit circuit heeft echter wat meer bochtenwerk dan Monza, maar ook veel hoge snelheid sectoren.
