Bernie Ecclestone is verrast over het succes van de politieke invloed van Lewis Hamilton bij Mercedes. Eerder in 2020 kreeg de voormalige F1-supremo kritiek van Hamilton, die zei dat de opmerkingen van de 90-jarige over racisme "ongeschoold en onwetend" waren.

Ecclestone reageerde toen op de zesvoudig wereldkampioen, die zich druk inzet voor de Black Lives Matter-beweging: "Denk niet aan wat je huidskleur is - denk aan welke kleur je geest heeft."

Toen hem werd gevraagd naar zijn woordenwisseling met Hamilton, zei Ecclestone woensdag op zijn 90ste verjaardag tegen de krant Bild: "Daar wil ik verder niets over zeggen. Maar ik had niet gedacht dat Mercedes Hamilton zoveel invloed zou geven om de auto zwart te schilderen."

"Ik had liever gezien dat ze meer zwarte mensen inhuren om de beweging te steunen. Er zijn heel, heel veel intelligente zwarte mensen die een kans op hogere banen zouden moeten krijgen", zei hij.

Als ik zulke beslissingen mag nemen op mijn 90ste, dan teken ik daar graag voor. Maar dat terzijde. Ik vind dat Lewis ook erg graag polariseert. Alles wat niet met mij is, is tegen mij. Lijkt Trump wel.

      Waarom heeft hij een punt? Inhuren omdat ze zwart zijn?
      Huur gewoon de beste in, welke kleur dan ook.

      Mijn vermoeden;
      Vandaar dat de onderhandelingen van zijn nieuwe contract zijn gestaakt tot nader order. Waarschijnlijk gaat Merc in de toekomst niet meer akkoord met dit soort akkefietjes. Kan me voorstellen dat Merc zich voor een karretje gespannen voelt met al die uitspattingen van Lewis.

      Enig idee waarom Paddy Lowe in 2016 te horen kreeg dat hij zijn koffers kon pakken? Ik zal je helpen, er zat een (grote) kern van waarheid in hetgeen Hamilton beweerde. Lowe had o.a. de taak Rosberg en Hamilton in toom te houden. Ook daarin was hij niet op zijn best/geheel onpartijdig. Wolff haalde zijn schouders niet bepaald op maar nam dus duidelijke maatregelen.

      Hamilton was vanwege een begrafenis afwezig, maar dat vergeten we voor het gemak maar even...

      Sinds wanneer heeft Toto iets te zeggen over de autoproductie van Mercedes voor de openbare weg?

      Sinds wanneer is Toto verantwoordelijk voor dit soort uitspraken? Lewis is geen koning die gebonden is aan een ministeriële verantwoordelijkheid van Wolff. Coureurs kunnen hun eigen mannetje wel staan wat een Verstappen, Kvyat, Sainz en Kimi duidelijk hebben gedaan.
