Toto Wolff na kwalificatie: "Deze keer trok Bottas aan het langste eind"

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff kan weer tevreden zijn na een één-twee voor zijn team. Het was de zoveelste van dit seizoen, maar de pole position was niet voor Lewis Hamilton, maar voor Valtteri Bottas. De Finse coureur was met een 1:13.608 te snel voor zijn teamgenoot.

De enige bedreiging die Toto Wolff morgen heeft is van Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen die als derde finishte in de kwalificatie. De drie coureurs startten morgen op de mediumband, terwijl het de rest van de top tien op de soft band start.

De kwalificatie leek naar Mercedes te gaan, maar Max Verstappen was goed onderweg. Uiteindelijk finishte de Mercedessen toch voor de 23-jarige Nederlander. Het was volgens Toto Wolff spannend tot de laatste seconden van de kwalificatie. “Dit was een geweldige kwalificatiesessie, die opnieuw neerkwam op de laatste ronde van de laatste run.”

In Portugal leek Bottas met de pole ervandoor te gaan, maar toch wist zijn teamgenoot op een haar na de pole af te pakken. Dit weekend was het eindelijk raak voor de coureur met nummer 77. “Afgelopen weekend in Portugal leek Valtteri de overhand te hebben tijdens de kwalificatie, waarna Lewis op het einde de pole pakte met een tiende; deze keer trok Valtteri aan het langste eind en kon de pole claimen. Ze zijn aan elkaar gewaagd, dat hebben we gezien in de kwalificatie tijdens de laatste races, met het voordeel heen en weer slingerend, dat is precies hoe het zou moeten zijn”, vertelt Toto tegenover Sky Sports.

Racen is het enige wat telt

Wolff hoopt op een leuke race met veel spektakel. “Voor morgen hebben we besloten om op de medium compound te starten omdat de soft er niet geweldig uitzag tijdens de lange runs. Het enige dat we de coureurs zullen vertellen, is dat ze hard moeten racen. Al het andere weten ze en we kijken er naar uit om te zien hoe het uitpakt.”

Bottas wordt veelal onterecht als een 2de rangs piloot omschreven maar op dagen als vandaag laat hij zien waar hij toe in staat is.

Op zaterdag is Bottas zo slecht nog niet maar zijn race skills laten te wensen over om het Hamilton moeilijk te maken.

ja de titel van Lewis is bijna binnen dus worden de auto's weer gelijkwaardig afgesteld . Ik heb altijd het idee dat ze de auto van Lewis net iets meer vermogen geven zodat het net lijkt of Lewis sneller is , en dat kan ook want ze hebben toch geen tegenstand.

  Tuurlijk joh. Het is allemaal een toneelstukje want Hamilton is helemaal niet zo goed. Bij McLaren was het ook allemaal fake toch?
  En in het jaar dat Rosberg kampioen werd kreeg Hamilton steeds pech omdat Mercedes een keer een Duitse kampioen wilde toch?
  
  Als je die onzin blijft verkondigen wordt het inderdaad je eigen waarheid.
