Alex Wurz kraakt F1-kalender met 23 races af

Alex Wurz heeft de plannen van de Formule 1 om langere kalenders te plannen door het formaat van het raceweekend in te korten tot slechts twee dagen, afgekraakt. Nadat de F1 het tweedaagse format op Imola had uitgeprobeerd, lekte tegelijkertijd een conceptkalender voor 2021 uit met een nieuw record van 23 races in één seizoen.

Wurz, een voormalig F1-coureur en nu voorzitter van de Grand Prix Drivers Association, beschuldigde Liberty Media ervan koste wat het kost meer races te plannen. Tegen de Oostenrijkse omroep ORF zei hij: "Omdat de mensen in de Formule 1 met 21 races al tot het uiterste worden gedreven, proberen ze nu de raceweekenden in te korten."

"Als je bijvoorbeeld bij zes Grands Prix de vrijdag eraf haalt, krijg je nog twee raceweekenden erbij. Maar de Formule 1 verdient op deze manier ook geld. Het is de organisator die betaalt voor de Grand Prix, dus het is het circuit dat de extra kosten betaalt. Het draait allemaal om geld", aldus de Oostenrijker.

Wurz zei dat veel F1-racepromotors al worstelen om winstgevend te zijn, waardoor het plan 'verre van ideaal' voor hen is. "Het kost hen bijna hetzelfde, maar nu hebben ze maar twee dagen om dat geld terug te verdienen. De winstgevendheid van de circuits neemt daardoor af, maar dat lijkt Liberty niet uit te maken."
