Jan Lammers: "F1 zal slechte kanten Saoedi-Arabië in de spotlights zetten"

Controverse over de nieuw aangekondigde F1-race in Saoedi-Arabië zal licht werpen op de problemen in het land. Dat is de mening van Jan Lammers, voormalig F1-coureur en nu het uithangbord voor de Nederlandse Grand Prix in Zandvoort.

Na de aankondiging van de nachtrace van 2021 in Jeddah riep Amnesty International Lewis Hamilton op om het evenement aan de kaak te stellen als poging tot 'handen wassen in onschuld door sport naar het land te halen' en zo de staat van dienst op het gebied van de mensenrechten in Saudi-Arabië een beter aanzicht te geven.

Lammers heeft andere visie

Lammers zegt echter dat het feit dat Saudi-Arabië toetreedt tot de kalender in feite alleen maar licht zal werpen op de problemen van het land.

De 64-jarige Nederlander: "Een land kan echt worden verbeterd door daar een race te houden. We zagen dit al in Nederland, waar alle milieuactivisten een platform kregen om hun standpunten duidelijk te maken. Als je het zo bekijkt, is het een goede zaak voor iedereen."

"Als de Formule 1 niet naar Saoedi-Arabië zou gaan, zou er veel minder aandacht zijn voor die kwesties. Nu zal de hele wereld erover praten."

Ook vindt Lammers het een goede zaak dat Hamilton de aanval op Saoedi-Arabië heeft uitgesteld, ook al is de Mercedes-coureur op veel andere politieke fronten actief.

"Ik vind het jammer dat coureurs als Lewis de fans bij politieke zaken betrekken, hoe nobel ze het ook willen, ik weet niet zeker of ik het goed of slecht moet vinden. Uiteindelijk willen de fans naar autosport kijken en niet naar iets anders. Je wilt niet per se betrokken raken bij de politiek en dat zou ook niet het doel van de Formule 1 moeten zijn."

Ik ben echt wel maatschappelijk betrokken en geïnteresseerd in politiek, maar Lammers heeft hier absoluut een punt: ik kijk ter ontspanning naar Formule 1. En dus heb ik geen zijn om ook dan weer geconfronteerd te worden met allerlei problemen in de wereld.

Ik ben echt wel maatschappelijk betrokken en geïnteresseerd in politiek, maar Lammers heeft hier absoluut een punt: ik kijk ter ontspanning naar Formule 1. En dus heb ik geen zijn om ook dan weer geconfronteerd te worden met allerlei problemen in de wereld.

  Precies ik zit er ook niet op te wachten, sterker nog ik schakel pas in als die onzin voorbij is, het verpest voor mij de fun van de F1 met al dat gezeik ik wil er niets van zien.

  Soms is het mooi zoals die American Football speler die knielde. Maar dan is het echt een eenmalige actie met impact. Bij Hamilton is het een hele campagne en daar zit ik ook niet echt op wachten. Er is trouwens ook een engelse voetballer die zich inzet voor arme kinderen en daar de politiek bij betrekt. Dat vind ik ook wel wat hebben.

  Als het van Lewis maar eenmalig was dan was het ook prima, dit is gewoon een drama, ik kan mij niet voorstellen dat de andere rijders hier mee door gaan in 2021.

  @ Joep, je bedoelt Marcus Rashford, die met een netto waarde van 80 miljoen pond ongeveer 20 miljoen pond aan fondsen heeft "opgehaald" voor het geven van gratis maaltijden voor arme kinderen? Moet je voor de grap eens opzoeken wat hij zelf heeft bijgedragen aan geld. Prima dat hij zijn bekendheid daarvoor inzet maar met slechts een kwart van zijn netto waarde had hij er ook geweest en nog steeds 60 miljoen waard geweest. Dat was pas echt nobel geweest.

Ik voer liever de discussie over de sport hier. En ik vrees zo'n supermarkt racecircuit met uitloopstroken tot de horizon, en van dat neppe kunstlicht waardoor het lijkt dat je naar de F1 Esports zit te kijken.
Dit seizoen hebben we weer echte circuits gezien met grindbakken. Saudi wordt zo'n draak van een Tilke-baan, met daaromheen een kunstmatig gedoe met watervallen, laserlicht en achtbanen. Voor de liefhebber zullen we maar zeggen.

F1 wil geld verdienen, dus politiek correct en zo min mogelijk mensen tegen de schenen schoppen.
