Turkije hoopt op lege plek op F1-kalender 2021

De Formule 1 heeft vanochtend de kalender voor 2021 bekend gemaakt. Daarop staan 23 races waarvan er nog één open staat. Die plek was aanvankelijk voor Vietnam, maar door politieke problemen in de organisatie staat die Grand Prix niet op de kalender.

De grootste kans om die open plek in te vullen maken de circuits in Imola, Istanboel of Portimao. Toto Wolff hoopt dat de F1 heeft geleerd van 2020, toen enkele meer traditionele circuits midden in de coronacrisis op de F1-kalender werden gezet en zorgden voor leuke interessante races. Wolff zei hierover: "Ik zit niet te wachten op circuits die eruit zien als grote parkeerterreinen van supermarkten. We hebben old-skool circuits nodig waarop fouten echt worden afgestraft."

Istanbul Park, dat dit weekend de Turkse GP op een uitdagend circuit zal organiseren, hoopt duidelijk dat lege slot in 2021 veilig te stellen.

Promotor Vural Ak tegenover persbureau Anadolu: "Ik probeer het vast te houden. We zijn in gesprek om volgend jaar ook de Turkse GP te houden. Het zal waarschijnlijk zeer binnenkort worden afgerond. Mijn doel is om van deze race een vast onderdeel op de F1-kalender te maken."

Barcelona heeft ondertussen een race van 9 mei gepland ondanks het feit dat er nog geen contract is getekend met Liberty Media, terwijl Interlagos nog steeds op de kalender van 2021 staat, ook al heeft Rio de Janeiro een rivaliserend bod uitgebracht.

F1 zou moeten wegblijven uit landen met dictators, reken ik Turkije ook onder want democratie is onder ome Erdo erg ver te zoeken. Nee, gewoon weer lekker naar Portugal. Was erg vermakelijk weekend dat van Portimao
