Wolff verwacht contractverlenging Hamilton: "Ik zie geen reden waarom niet"

Waar er eerst veel speculatie was, heeft Toto Wolff - teambaas van Mercedes - laten weten dat hij volgend jaar alsnog teambaas blijft. Het feit dat Toto aan de top van het team zou staan zou één van de factoren zijn of Hamilton voor volgend jaar voor het team van Mercedes gaat rijden. Dit is dusver nog geen zekerheid. Echter, Toto Wolff denkt daar anders over.

Het contract van Lewis Hamilton verloopt over anderhalve maand. Een ironisch idee, aangezien Hamilton over een dag mogelijk zijn zevende wereldtitel kan binnenslepen. Dusver is er door Hamilton geen handtekening gezet, maar zowel Hamilton als Toto Wolff zijn niet bang voor een mismatch; Hamilton heeft aangegeven dat hij louter zoekt naar verbeteringen in het contract.

"Onze band is gebaseerd op wederkerig vertrouwen", zo vertelt Wolff bij Sky Sports F1. "Vaak genoeg hebben we elkaar positieve signalen gegeven. Er is echt geen reden voor Lewis om niet een een auto te zitten die zo competitief is als een Mercedes", aldus Wolff.

Dus, aangezien er nog geen coureur bevestigd is voor volgend jaar, meent Wolff dat ze niet van plan zijn om elders te kijken. "Er is geen reden voor ons om mogelijk naar andere coureurs te kijken", zo vertelt de Mercedes-teambaas. "Het is een perfecte samenwerking, en ik zie geen reden waarom die niet door zou kunnen gaan. Wel kan ik met 100% zekerheid zeggen dat ik volgend jaar teambaas van Mercedes zal zijn", zo concludeert Wolff.

Waar rijdt de zesvoudig (en wie weet zevenvoudig) wereldkampioen volgend jaar - blijft Hamilton bij Mercedes, of in überhaupt in de Formule 1?

Het schijnt dat het salaris niet het probleem is.
Het zit hem in de randzaken waarmee Lewis zich bezighoudt.
Lewis wil zijn bekende politieke statements blijven uitdragen maar Mercedes wil daar duidelijke afspraken en vangrails in aangeven
Zolang daar geen helderheid in komt blijft de bevestiging uit.
