Teambaas Alfa Romeo over puntloos resultaat: "We konden niet profiteren van geweldige kwalificatie"

Een puntloos resultaat voor Alfa Romeo in Turkije tijdens de race op het circuit in Istanboel. De Zwitserse renstal mag spreken van een slechte race, vooral omdat beide auto’s in de top tien waren beland tijdens de kwalificatie van zaterdag.

De dreiging van aanhoudende regen kwam niet uit en de race veranderde in een strijd op een geleidelijk opdrogende baan, met coureurs die snel overschakelden naar de intermediates. Hier ontstond een omkeerpunt en snel ging het hele veld naar de inters. Die band lag de coureurs van Alfa Romeo niet. Terwijl hun stints op de blauwe band goed waren, lukte de coureurs het niet om snelheid te vinden op de intermediates.

Ondanks het puntloze resultaat, betekent het goede optreden tijdens de kwalificatie een grote zelfvertrouwen boost voor het team. Nu de directe rivalen niet scoren en er nog maar drie rondes op de kalender staan, wordt de achtste plaats in het kampioenschap steeds reëler. De finish is in zicht, maar er is nog veel werk aan de winkel, zo vertelt Vasseur. "We konden niet profiteren van de zeer sterke prestatie die we gisteren in de kwalificatie hebben geleverd, toen we tot de snelste op de baan behoorden."

"Onze race was uitdagend, met banden die erg moeilijk te beheren waren: we hadden waarschijnlijk onze mannetje kunnen staan op een natte baan, maar in geleidelijk opdrogende omstandigheden hadden we moeite. Uiteindelijk verloren we Antonio vanwege een technisch probleem aan het begin van de race en Kimi eindigde als 15e, wat niet was wat we hadden gehoopt. Positief is dat we in ieder geval geen terrein verloren op onze rivalen in het kampioenschap en we zijn een stap dichter bij het bevestigen van onze achtste plaats in het klassement, met nog drie races te gaan."
