Teams gaan in Bahrein en Abu Dhabi nieuwe banden testen

Pirelli zal de komende races de F1-teams laten testen met de C3 en C4 banden waarmee in 2021 zal worden gereden. Tijdens de vrije trainingen op vrijdag in Bahrein en Abu Dhabi mogen de teams gebruik maken van die banden zodat Pirelli feedback kan verzamelen.

Diverse teams en coureurs hebben eerder de banden van volgend seizoen getest tijdens de Grand Prix van Portugal. Tijdens de eerste 30 minuten van de tweede training kregen teams een niet-geïdentificeerde band toegewezen van volgend jaar om data te verzamelen. Voor de aanstaande test in Bahrein zullen naast de reguliere toewijzing aan teams twee sets C3-banden 2021 beschikbaar worden gesteld. Een van deze mag tijdens de vrijdagsessies worden gereden en de andere moet in de tweede training worden uitgevoerd. In Abu Dhabi ontvangen teams een enkele extra set C4-banden voor 2021, de op een na zachtste compound van Pirelli, waarmee tijdens de tweede training moet worden gereden.

Duurzaamheid

Pirelli F1-chef Mario Isola zei vóór de Turkse Grand Prix dat de focus van het bedrijf bij de ontwikkeling van de banden van volgend jaar ligt op het vergroten van de duurzaamheid, om het hoofd te bieden aan de toegenomen krachten die auto's dit jaar hebben aangetoond.

De Italiaan zegt hierover: "Het doel van de nieuwe constructie was voornamelijk om het niveau te verhogen, want wat we kunnen zien aan de telemetriegegevens die we na elke race ontvangen, is dat het prestatieniveau elk weekend groeit. Meestal ontwikkelen we elk jaar nieuwe banden om het integriteitsniveau te verhogen of anderzijds om de spanningstoename te beperken. Dat leidt uiteraard tot andere gevolgen, zoals bijvoorbeeld oververhitting of hogere degradatie."
