Sebastian Vettel: "Ik stop met racen voor ik 40 ben"

Sebastian Vettel heeft zich bij Lewis Hamilton gevoegd door toe te geven dat zijn carrière nu op weg is naar het einde. Met zijn zevende titel op zak zei de 35-jarige Hamilton van Mercedes dat hij niet door zal gaan met racen tot hij in de 40 is, zoals Kimi Raikkonen op dit moment doet.

Viervoudig wereldkampioen Vettel stapt volgend jaar over van Ferrari naar Aston Martin en begrijpt zijn Britse collega daarin die volgend jaar overstapt van Ferrari naar Aston Martin, is het daarmee eens.

"Ik ben nu 33, ik blijf nog drie jaar racen. Ik wil echt niet doorgaan tot ik 40 ben. Dus als je het echt een antwoord wil, dan heb ik nog drie tot zeven jaar in de Formule 1."

Twijfelen aan zichzelf

De Duitser geeft toe dat zijn motivatie in 2020 moeilijk was, omdat hij moeite heeft om teamgenoot Charles Leclerc bij te houden.

Vettel: "Het seizoen van dit jaar was erg moeilijk en ik geef toe dat ik zelfs twijfels had over mijn eigen kunnen. Ik heb dit seizoen niet gepresteerd zoals ik wilde n de relaties met het team zijn ook niet de gemakkelijkste. De liefdesaffaire is voorbij, maar ik ben nog steeds gemotiveerd."

Hij verduidelijkte echter dat hij het meest gemotiveerd is over zijn verhuizing naar een nieuw project voor 2021 en de jaren erna. "Ik verwacht nog steeds veel van de resterende races, maar ik denk dat het nieuwe project met Aston Martin veel mogelijkheden biedt. We zullen niet snel succes kunnen boeken, maar ik weet zeker dat het een heel andere sfeer zal zijn. We hebben daar een nieuw doel - het team vooruit helpen", zei Vettel.

Sorry, hoe moet hij zijn toekomstig team vooruit helpen? Bij Ferrari heeft hij ook jaren de kans gehad om dat te doen.

  er staat toch niet dat hij dat zelf gaat doen? Samen, als team willen ze vooruit. Van middenmoot, naar subtop waar ze nu al deels zijn naar wellicht de top. Logische ambities als je ziet wat er achter de schermen allemaal al is veranderd.
  Overigens is dat bij Ferrari ook best redelijk gelukt als je kijkt waar ze in 2014 stonden. 2015 was al een heel stuk beter met 3 overwinningen en in 2017 en 2018 konden ze zelfs een tijd lang meedoen voor de titel. Niet dat dat aan Vettel lag, maar hij was er wel onderdeel van.

  En coureurs hebben niet meer zoveel invloed op de auto’s, engineers met hun computers en windtunnel zijn de elementen om een auto te ontwikkelen.

  Bij Ferrari zijn coureurs gewoon werknemers die, om het even plat te zeggen, die niet moeten zeuren of ouwehoeren maar gewoon gas moeten geven. Als ze dat doen dan zorgen de engineers en de fabriek wel voor de auto.
  
  Je moet wel een heel sterke combinatie van team manager en coureur hebben wil je dat doorbreken (zoals Todt/Schumacher) en heb je dat niet dan kom je als coureur niet ver en zul je idd gewoon moeten gasgeven en hopen dat je iets krijgt wat werkt.
