Mick Schumacher: "Heb twee goede tips van mijn vader gekregen"

Mick Schumacher zegt dat hij "een of twee tips" van zijn beroemde vader heeft gebruikt tijdens zijn opmars naar de Formule 1.

Er wordt nu zeer verwacht dat Haas binnenkort zal aankondigen dat de 21-jarige Schumacher volgend jaar zal overstappen naar de hoogste categorie van de autosport.

Met zijn voorsprong op Callum Ilott en Yuki Tsunoda hervat de Duitser zijn poging om de Formule 2-titel dit weekend in Bahrein te winnen.

"We gingen de pauze in met een heel goed gevoel vanuit Sochi - ik zou graag verder zijn gegaan", zei Schumacher tegen RTL. "Nu ben ik blij dat het weer begint in Bahrein en voel ik me goed voorbereid."

In hetzelfde interview gaf hij toe dat hij heeft geprofiteerd van het advies van zijn vader en zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Michael Schumacher, die sinds zijn skival in 2013 niet meer is gezien of gehoord.

"Natuurlijk gebruik ik een of twee tips van mijn vader - zelfs uit mijn kartingdagen", onthulde hij.

“Tegelijkertijd zijn we natuurlijk verschillende mensen en hebben we verschillende ervaringen opgedaan in de juniorenklassen. En je moet vandaag ook anders met de auto's rijden.

"We hebben een Formule 2-auto die 780 kilo weegt, terwijl de auto's van zijn tijd 500 kilo waren. Maar er zijn natuurlijk een paar overeenkomsten."

Maar nu hij op het punt staat zijn vader te volgen in de Formule 1, zegt Mick dat hij nu volledig gaat waarderen wat Michael Schumacher heeft bereikt.

'Wat hij deed was buitengewoon,' zei Mick. "Ik realiseer me dat elke dag meer en meer.

"In het jaar nadat ik geboren was, won hij de eerste van vijf wereldkampioenschappen op rij, wat ik nog steeds ongelooflijk vind", onthulde hij.

"Maar eerlijk gezegd heb ik hem nog nooit als de beste coureur ter wereld gezien - in de eerste plaats is hij gewoon mijn vader."

Op de vraag of het een grote druk is om de volgende 'Schumacher' in de schijnwerpers te zijn, antwoordde Schumacher: "Om eerlijk te zijn voel ik geen enkele druk vanwege de familienaam.

"De meeste stress komt van mijzelf", zei hij tegen Kicker.

En als hij in 2021 de grid haalt, beloofde Mick dezelfde gestage aanpak te volgen die zijn doelen in de juniorcategorieën heeft opgeleverd.

"Alles is een leercurve," zei hij.

"Als je de tijd neemt om op de details in te gaan, om dingen correct te leren, zal het op de lange termijn beter aflopen dan wanneer je iets probeert te haasten."

Hij komt echt over als een hele zelfbewuste en intelligente jonge knaap. Ik hoop en verwacht dat hij best wat leuke dingen kan gaan doen in de F1.

  Clemenza: Bar weinig. Eigenlijk alleen dat ‘ie elke ochtend z’n tanden moet poetsen en ‘s avonds een beetje optijd moet gaan slapen. Daar kon Mick zich wel in vinden.

  Roger, had ‘m ook het liefst daar gezien inderdaad. Heb verder (nog) weinig met Haas omwille van de coureurs. Kan verandering in komen als Mick er rijdt, al zou ik Mazepin dan weer betreuren als teamgenoot haha.
