Callum Ilott stopt mogelijk jaar met racen

Callum Ilott zegt dat hij in 2021 misschien een sabbatical moet nemen. De Brit is lid van het Ferrari-opleidingsprogramma en Formule 2-titelkandidaat, en de afgelopen maanden in de race was voor een Haas- of Alfa Romeo-stoel voor volgend jaar.

Ferrari heeft echter alleen Mick Schumacher gepromoveerd, waardoor de 22-jarige Ilott het vooruitzicht heeft om in 2021 helemaal niet te racen.

"Ik werk eraan", zei hij in Bahrein, te midden van speculaties dat hij volgend jaar misschien alleen als reservecoureur van Ferrari kan dienen. "Ik hoop dat ik volgend jaar in de paddock sta en ik wil zoveel mogelijk betrokken zijn bij de Formule 1 ter voorbereiding op 2022, wanneer ik mijn debuut hoop te maken."

Ilott bagatelliseerde het idee dat hij volgend jaar weer in de Formule 2 zou racen. "Ik hoop iets te kunnen racen, maar de kans is erg klein", gaf hij toe. "Het is al zo laat in het jaar en alle stoelen zijn bezet. De kans dat ik nog een jaar Formule 2 ga doen is ook erg klein."

    Pijnlijk, dat mannen als Latifi & Mazepin dan in de F1 zitten, en een jongen als Ilott die echt wel talent heeft aan de kant staat.

      Genoeg voorbeelden uit heden en verleden van goede coureurs die het (bet) niet haalden en minder goede coureurs dankzij geld of connecties wel. Helaas het hoort bij de Formule 1 die politiek

      Nog een jaar F2 zit er bij een titel niet in, maar ook niet verstandig bij P2... hij moet door en inmiddels zijn in andere klassen de leuke stoeltjes wel weg. Al vind ik m wel wat voor Carlin Indycar om de road/streetcoarses te doen. Een jaar niks is hetzelfde als vergeten worden.

      Als die ouwe Kimi nou zijn handschoenen en racehelm aan de wilgen had gehangen was er mss 'n plaatsje vrij, maar nee, hij moet zo nodig nog 'n keertje.
      Begrijp me niet verkeerd, ik ben fan van Kimi, maar genoeg is genoeg.

      Kimi heeft zichtbaar plezier en is kennelijk nog ruimschoots in staat het door Sauber verlangde niveau te halen. Hij zorgt voor spektakel op de baan en is daarbuiten natuurlijk een buitengewoon character.

      Daarnaast fungeert hij als een goede graadmeter voor de zich nog altijd goed ontwikkelende Giovinazzi, die eveneens een sterk seizoen rijdt.

      Dus zelfs voor mij als buitenstaander is goed zichtbaar waarom Sauber met dit rijdersduo doorgaat. Doorselecteren om het doorselecteren slaat nergens op.

      RogerZzz, ik schrijf nergens dat ik niet geniet van Kimi want dat doe ik wel degelijk, maar mijn punt is dat genoeg genoeg is.
      Maar ik ben het wel met je eens dat je niet moet selecteren om te selecteren.

      Jazeker geniet ik nog van Kimi, maar dit topic gaat over Callum Ilott, ook een belofte, en ik vind het jammer dat zulke jongens geen stoeltje hebben....

      Dat Illot geen stoeltje heeft is zeker jammer, maar dat doet niets af aan het feit dat er geen reden is voor Sauber om de status quo niet te behouden.

      Ik vind een voorstander van klantenteams en vind dat meer teams zouden moeten werken volgens het Red Bull/Toro Rosso-model - niet in de laatste plaats omdat Red Bull nu onevenredig veel invloed heeft in de paddock vanwege het enkele feit dat er twee teams onder haar vlag racen.

      In mijn visie heb je een familie-structuur tussen fabrikanten/renstallen, zoals Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault en Red Bull met daaronder semi-autonome privateer-satelietteams. Die kopen materiaal in en krijgen krijgen de data van de auto van het jaar ervoor en mogen op basis van dat concept verder ontwikkelen en jonge veelbelovende coureurs kunnen daar eventueel worden gestald.

      Daarom vind ik het ook erg jammer dat de FIA niet in het voordeel van Racing Point heeft beslist. Want ik vind het persoonlijk erg leuk dat Racing Point vooraan meedoet.

    Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat Ferrari deze jongen een jaar laat verpieteren. Die wordt sowieso testcoureur, en een tweede jaar F2 lijkt me zeker ook niet ondenkbaar (ervan uitgaande dat Mick kampioen wordt).
