Pirelli-baas: "Baanrecords zullen dit weekend verbroken gaan worden"

Aanstaand weekend zal de F1 de laatste race van het seizoen rijden: de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi op het Yas Marina Circuit. Het Yas Marina Circuit is een samenspel van een een enorm snel eerste helft met onder andere een recht stuk van meer dan twee kilometer, gevolgd door een bochtig gedeelte die deels onder een hotel doorloopt. Mario Isola - Pirelli topman naar de Formule 1 - is van mening dat dit weekend wat baanrecords gaan sneuvelen.

Voor de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi zal Pirelli de C3-, C4- en C5-banden meenemen. Dit wil dus zeggen dat de kwalificatie zal worden verreden op de zachtst mogelijk banden-compound - zorgend voor maximale grip. "Abu Dhabi markeert het einde van een seizoen waarin we keihard gewerkt hebben, maar het stopt niet na de race", aldus Isola. "Na de race zullen we nog doorwerken met de Formule 1 en Formule 2 om de respectievelijk 13-inch en 18-inch banden te testen", waarmee Isola refereert naar onder andere de Young Driver Test.

"We nemen 4500 banden mee naar Abu Dhabi - meer dan het dubbele van het gebruikelijke", zo vertelt Isola verder. Vooral de tweedaagse F1-test direct na de Grand Prix zal interessant zijn, aangezien de teams dan direct het verschil tussen de 2019-banden en de 2020-banden kunnen testen tijdens gelijke omstandigheden", aldus Isola. "Maar eerst staat er een Grand Prix voor de boeg, waarin we hoogstwaarschijnlijk baanrecords zullen zien sneuvelen - de teams hebben inmiddels hun kennis over de huidige banden gemaximaliseerd", aldus Isola.
