Williams-invaller Jack Aitken weet nog niet of hij racet in 2021: "Situatie is moeilijk"

Jack Aitken maakte vorige week als een duvel uit een doosje zijn F1-debuut. Doordat Lewis Hamilton besmet was geraakt met het coronavirus mocht hij niet rijden en riep Mercedes George Russell als vervanger op van de zevenvoudig wereldkampioen. Williams moest hierdoor op zoek naar een invaller en sprak meteen reserve- en testcoureur Jack Aitken aan.

De ene Brit vervangt de andere en zo maakte Aitken onverwachts zijn F1-debuut. Het zal voorlopig echter bij een eenmalig optreden blijven want Lewis Hamilton verrichtte alle verplichte coronatests met succes en kon daardoor gisteren alsnog instappen in zijn Mercedes, waardoor Russell weer naar Williams terugging.

De jonge Brit heeft het er moeilijk mee, ook omdat de situatie voor 2021 nog niet duidelijk is. Dit jaar reed hij F2 maar hij twijfelt of dat volgend seizoen ook zo is.

Aitken zei hierover: "Het is nogal moeilijk om te accepteren dat ik dit weekend niet kan racen maar ik wist dat die mogelijkheid er altijd in heeft gezeten. Als ze mij nodig hebben dan ben ik er klaar voor."

"Ik weet nog niet of ik volgend jaar weer in de Formule 2 zal racen, ik denk namelijk dat het niet zinvol is om nog een jaar daar rond te rijden, tenzij het met een topteam is maar het budget wat je daarvoor moet meebrengen is erg lastig. Ik zou volgend jaar graag bij Williams blijven en doorzetten wat we dit jaar zijn begonnen."
