Charles Leclerc strijdvaardig voor kwalificatie: ''als we hard werken is top zes mogelijk''

Ferrari-coureur Charles Leclerc hield aan vorig weekend op de verkorte lay-out van het Bahrein International Circuit een dubbelgevoel over. Tijdens de kwalificatie op de zaterdag behaalde de Monegask met een ultiem rondje een vierde plek en had goede vooruitzichten voor de race op zondag. Maar tijdens de Grand Prix van Sakhir liet het 23-jarige supertalent zich van een slechte kant zien door in de openingsronde Sergio Perez van de baan te tikken en daarbij Max Verstappen mee te sleuren in de malaise. De Mexicaanse Racing Point-coureur kon zijn weg vervolgen en won verrassend de wedstrijd, maar de beide jongelingen moesten uitstappen. Voor deze manouvre heeft Leclerc een gridstraf gekregen van drie plaatsen.

In Abu Dhabi hoopt de Ferrari-rijder zich te revancheren en denkt dat een goede kwalificatie op de zaterdag weer tot de mogelijkheden behoord. ''Om eerlijk te zijn. Het gaat beter dan verwacht op een baan waarvan we dachten dat het moeilijk zou worden door de hitte en lange rechte stukken,'' kijkt Leclerc tevreden terug na de eerste twee vrije trainingen. ''Het lijkt erop dat we tussen de teams staan waar we normaal tegen vechten. Het is nog niet zo goed zoals het laatste weekend, maar we gaan vanavond hard werken en hopelijk maken we een stap vooruit,'' zei de tweevoudig Grand Prix-winnaar strijdvaardig. ''Het is moeilijk om te zeggen, maar als we vanavond goed werk leveren is een top zes mogelijk als alle eindjes aan elkaar worden geknoopt, maar dan ook echt alles. Dat is vrij optimistisch, maar dit is de manier om het laatste weekend goed aan te vangen.''

In de kwalificatie lijkt de SF1000 beter voor de dag te komen dan tijdens de race op zondag. De Monegask voorziet gelijk al problemen met de banden. ''Het is listig omdat je niet veel grip krijgt van de mediums, vooral tijdens een gehele ronde en helemaal bij een kwalificatierun. In de race lijkt het op een zachte band, maar dan zonder grip. Het is een risico om daarop te starten.''
