F1-kalender 2021 met 23 races officieel goedgekeurd

De World Motorsport Council van de FIA heeft de Formule 1-kalender voor 2021 goedgekeurd, waarop teams en coureurs zullen strijden in een recordaantal van 23 races. De versterkte kalender werd bekrachtigd tijdens de Algemene Vergadering van de FIA die plaatsvond voorafgaand aan de virtuele prijsuitreiking van vrijdag.

De 2021-campagne van de F1 begint op 21 maart in Melbourne en eindigt op 5 december in Abu Dhabi. De sport hoopt volgend jaar op een volledige terugkeer van het aantal toeschouwers bij races, hoewel er twijfel blijft bestaan of dit mogelijk zal zijn tijdens de openingsrace in Australië, waar strikte beperkingen en quarantainevereisten van kracht zullen blijven in de nabije toekomst.

Helaas is de veelgeprezen eerste Grand Prix van Vietnam, die gepland stond voor 25 april in Hanoi, definitief geschrapt hoewel de datum nog niet bekend is.

De twee nieuwe races op de kalender van volgend jaar zijn de terugkeer van de Nederlandse Grand Prix in Zandvoort, gepland voor 5 september, en een nachtrace in de straten van Jeddah, Saudi-Arabië, gepland als de voorlaatste race van het kampioenschap op 28 november.

Aangezien het seizoen 2021 terugvalt in overeenstemming met de gebruikelijke structuur van de F1, zullen er geen double-headers op dezelfde locatie zijn zoals dit jaar het geval was, maar teams zullen na de zomervakantie van F1 twee triple-header-weekenden moeten draaien: Spa, Zandvoort en Monza zullen na een pauze van een week worden gevolgd door een slopende stint in Sochi, Singapore en Suzuka.

Portimao, Mugello en Imola staan niet op de lijst voor volgend seizoen, maar alle drie de locaties blijven mogelijke opties om de open plek van 25 april in Vietnam in te vullen.
