Stoffel Vandoorne droomt niet over nieuwe kans in Formule 1

Stoffel Vandoorne debuteerde in 2016 in de Formule 1 in Abu Dhabi en finishte als tiende waarmee hij een punt scoorde. Dat was voor het team van McLaren, waarmee hij de twee seizoen erna ook actief was tijdens het hele seizoen, als teamgenoot van Fernando Alonso.

Naast de tweevoudig wereldkampioen had de Belg het lastig en eind 2018 hield zijn Formule 1-avontuur als racecoureur dan ook op. Hij vond nog wel zijn weg bij Mercedes als test- en reservecoureur maar toen Lewis Hamilton enkele weken geleden ziek was en niet kon racen vanwege corona werd niet Vandoorne maar George Russell in de auto gezet.

Een flinke teleurstelling en Vandoorne denkt dan ook niet dat hij nog een keer een kans krijgt. De 28-jarige coureur uit Kortrijk zei tegen Sporza: "Ik droom niet meteen van een nieuwe kans, dat kost me teveel energie. Mercedes geeft me een geweldige kans in de Formule E en ik wil die met beide handen aangrijpen. Natuurlijk zal ik altijd het gevoel hebben: wat als ik in een meer competitieve Formule 1-auto had gezeten? Dan had ik andere dingen kunnen laten zien."

Vandoorne weet echter ook dat hij iets unieks heeft meegemaakt en daarvoor is hij McLaren nog steeds dankbaar voor de kans die hij heeft gekregen. "Ik realiseer me dat ik iets unieks heb meegemaakt, zeker voor een jonge coureur zonder zak met geld. McLaren is een topteam, maar helaas niet toen ik er reed."

Stoffel heeft helaas pech gehad in zijn F1 carrière. Bij McLaren was alles om Alonso heen gebouwd en heeft hij geen faire kans gekregen. Daarnaast is hij te beleefd om eens met zijn vuist op tafel te slaan en een kans of mogelijkheid af te dwingen. Ook laatst tijdens de test voor Mercedes was het Nyck die indruk maakte en waar iedereen het over had. Wanneer Stoffel had mogen invallen voor Lewis en niet Russel, dan denk ik ook niet dat het zo een spectaculaire race was geworden en dat hij op zo een manier Bottas de baas had kunnen zijn.

  Helaas een hele slechte timing getroffen. De auto waar hij in reed was eenvoudig niet goed genoeg. Ook Alonso kon daarmee geen potten breken. In de F1 is dan je reputatie naar de filistijnen. Toto zal hem niet in de Merceds zetten (dat hebben we al gezien), omdat hij dan ineens zou laten zien dat hij in een goede auto wel wat kan. Dat zou de prestatie van Lewis dan weer naar beneden halen, en dus krijgt hij als reserverijder niet die kans die hij verdient.

Een heel aardige beleefde jonge die Stoffel Vandoorne, maar alleen met aardig zijn red je het niet in de F1 en die F1 was net even een stapje te hoog voor hem. Natuurlijk had hij ook niet de beschikken over echt goed materiaal, maar bleef toch ook te ver achter bij zijn teamgenoot.

  Hoe kan jij daar nu over oordelen? De enige reden hij het niet in de F1 gered heeft was omdat hij niet voldoende "backing" had. Niet onder de vorm van een vader die de ins and outs van F1 kent (Verstappen, Rossberg, Sainz, ..). Niet onder de vorm van vermogen om zo'n backing te garanderen (Stroll, Latifi, Norris, Sainz, Mazepin, Perez, ...). Niet onder de vorm van een teambaas waarvan hij vertrouwen krijgt.
  
  Die teambaas had hij .. en dat was Ron Dennis .. einde verhaal. Stampen, op tafel slaan, niets had daar ook maar iets aan kunnen veranderen.

Stoffel moet mss wel spijt hebben dat hij teveel geld vroeg om voor TR te rijden het had anders kunnen lopen, jaar erna was Ricciardo weg bij RB ..
