Barcelona tekent nieuwe F1-contract voor 1 jaar

De Spaanse Grand Prix tekent een contractverlenging van één jaar voor 2021 en bespreekt vervolgens de toekomst op langere termijn met de nieuwe F1-CEO Stefano Domenicali. Op de officiële kalender van 2021 heeft de racedatum van 9 mei van Circuit de Catalunya de voorlopige status 'onderhevig aan contract' gekregen.

Eén van de problemen was de onrust in het management bij de Spaanse gastheer. "Tijdens de Grand Prix van dit jaar hebben we Chase Carey ontmoet om ons voor te stellen en het eerste contact te leggen", vertelde de nieuwe circuitbaas Josep Lluis Santamaria aan El Mundo Deportivo.

"Van daaruit begonnen we met gesprekken over een verlenging. De F1 vroeg ons om te kalmeren en vertelde ons dat in september-oktober de kalender van 2021 zou worden overwogen. We hebben het contract al vastgelegd en in principe wordt het een verlenging van een jaar", onthulde hij. "Ze wilden dat aangezien er een verandering was met Stefano Domenicali - die de positie van Chase Carey overneemt. Hij wilde dat het nieuwe langetermijncontract door Stefano zou worden afgehandeld."

Santamaria legde uit dat Barcelona in de tussentijd bocht 10 zal wijzigen in samenwerking met de bestuursorganen van zowel F1 als MotoGP.

Wat betreft de aanstaande wintertest, bevestigde hij bijna dat Barcelona deze zoals gewoonlijk zal organiseren. "Dat is ook nog in afwachting van de handtekeningen, maar in de pers is al gelekt dat het hier in maart zal worden gehouden", aldus Santamaria.

Het is niet de leukste baan van allemaal maar wel een leuk weekend om naar toe te gaan. Kaarten zijn niet zo duur, vliegen is niet zo duur en Barcelona is leuk in Mei. Oostenrijk vond ik ook altijd leuk om heen te gaan maar nu is er wel een enorme invasie van oranje t-shirtjes. Ik hoop dat er volgend jaar weer een beetje gereisd kan worden en dan zou ik graag een weekend Silverstone doen.
