VeeKay maakt endurancedebuut tijdens de 24 uur van Daytona

Deze winter hoeft Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout zich niet te vervelen. Eind januari komt de Nederlandse IndyCar-coureur in actie tijdens de fameuze 24 uur van Daytona, de Amerikaanse tegenhanger van Le Mans. De in Hoofddorp geboren coureur zal uitkomen in de LMP2-klasse voor de renstal van DragonSpeed. VeeKay zal dan samen met drie andere teamgenoten op jacht gaan naar eeuwige roem. Voor de 20-jarige coureur wordt het zijn debuut in het langeafstandsracen.

De 24-uurs race in de Verenigde Staten wordt sinds 1966 al georganiseerd. De eerste editie werd gewonnen door de Britse Ken Miles en Amerikaan Lloyd Ruby in de Ford GT40. Het evenement maakt deel uit van het Amerikaanse kampioenschap IMSA, vergelijkbaar met het World Endurance Championship.

Voor VeeKay is deze zijstap naar het endurance racen een nieuw avontuur. Van zijn werkgever Ed Carpenter Racing kreeg de jonge Hollander de permissie om mee te mogen doen aan deze legendarische autosportwedstrijd. Helemaal onbekend is de 20-jarige niet met het rijden in een LMP2-bolide, maar tot officiële wedstrijden kwam het vooralsnog niet.

Ondanks geringe ervaring legt VeeKay de lat erg hoog voor hemzelf en zijn team. "Mijn doel is om met DragonSpeed voor de klasse-overwinning te strijden op Daytona", laat de 20-jarige ambitieus optekenen. "Wij hebben een sterk rijders kwartet en het het team heeft vorig jaar bewezen de eerste plaats te veroveren." DragonSpeed won in 2020 de LMP2-klasse op het befaamde circuit. "Ik kan niet wachten om mijn endurancedebuut te maken en voor podiumplaatsen te vechten. Uiteraard ben ik de teamleiding van DragonSpeed, teambaas Elton Julian en iniatiefnemers Rob Hodes en Charles Crews dankbaar voor deze kans."

De Nederlander deelt de #81-bolide van DragonSpeed met de Amerikaan Rob Hodes (59), de Canadees Garrett Grist (25) en de Brit Ben Hanley (35). De laatstgenoemde kwam VeeKay eerder al tegen op de baan tijdens de laatste editie van de Indy500. De race op Daytona start op zaterdag 30 januari.
